⚠️ Avant-hier, police & DGSI anticipaient 110.000 manifestants.

• Mouvement anti-CIP 1994 : 250 GAV.

⚠️ ETHNIC CLEANSING IN PALESTINE : DISGUST, ANGER AND SHAME. Just published by @lemondefr Three words come to mind to describe the feelings that overwhelm us in the face of the ongoing ethnic cleansing in Palestine: disgust, anger and shame. Disgust, first of all, at the horror of the scenes of looting and murder that have multiplied in the West Bank over the past two months, while the international community has remained silent. On June 6,in Hebron, an Israeli soldier opened fire on the car of the Abu Haikal family as it came to a stop: A bullet passed through the father's hand before striking his 7-month-old baby, Sam, in the head as he sat in his mother's arms in the back seat. On June 22, Reda and Issa, two young Palestinians aged 15 and 19 respectively, were shot dead near Beit Ummar. Israeli forces refused to return their bodies to their families. According to Israeli security sources cited by the newspaper Haaretz, Israel is currently holding the bodies of 1,700 Palestinians. On July 5, Ahmad Marouf Zeid, a four-month-old baby, died after his transfer to the hospital was blocked at the entrance to the village of Deir Ammar. Soldiers fired tear gas at residents who tried to break through the checkpoint to save the baby. The rest of July was even bloodier. On July 11, Israeli settlers, accompanied by soldiers, attacked a house in Al-Mughayyir, near Ramallah. Alerted by the cries, Fadi Hamdallah Al-Nassan, a 17-year-old footballer, a member of the national team, rushed to the scene. He was shot in the thigh and had to have his leg amputated; he died in hospital a week later. On July 20, two men were killed in Deir Jarir during a raid by settlers who came to seize their sheep. Three days later, two Palestinians were shot and killed in Beit Furik while trying to put out a fire set by settlers. In early June, near the Christian village of Taybeh, settlers had already prevented firefighters from reaching a fire they had started. Finally, on July 24, four Palestinians from the same family were killed in Tell, near Nablus, after several dozen armed settlers stormed the area, soon joined by soldiers. With two Israelis also killed in the clashes, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared that the village "should look like the refugee camps in Nablus and Tulkarem," referring to the widespread destruction carried out there by the Israeli army. The following night, settlers set fire to the nearby mosque in Qusra. Every year, during summer, when Western diplomats are on vacation, the suffering of Palestinians intensifies in deafening silence. During the holidays, the massacres continue. This summer reached new heights, to the point that even the United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, expressed concern. Since Sunday, August 9, settlers set up tents in the courtyards of Palestinian homes in Qusra, confining 15 people – including children – who were deprived of water, electricity, food and medicine. On Thursday, August 13, Huckabee condemned this as an "act of terror." The second feeling that arises is anger. These scenes of sickening violence are anything but isolated incidents. They are part of a strategy of terror now openly embraced by the settlers and backed by the Israeli army. The numbers speak for themselves: According to the Israeli non-governmental organization B'Tselem, 713 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank during the First Intifada (1987-1993), compared with 1,160 since October 7, 2023. On average, 124 Palestinians were killed each year in the West Bank during the First Intifada, compared with an annual average of 390 since October 7. That is more than three times higher. Our feeling is not mistaken: We are witnessing, stunned, an absolutely unprecedented unleashing of violence. The government backers of Israeli settler groups are fanning the flames, exemplified by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who, since October 7, has issued 250,000 gun permits and purchased 10,000 assault rifles for settlers. Following the clashes in Tell, this incendiary minister declared that the Palestinian village should "meet the same fate as Beit Hanoun in Gaza" – a city that was completely emptied of its population and then flattened by Israeli airstrikes and bulldozers. The Gaza Strip now serves as a grim model, and for good reason: 1,260 Palestinians have been killed there since the October 2025 "ceasefire," an average of four per day. The link between the unchecked violence of settlers and the aim of ethnic cleansing has been openly denounced by several former Israeli officials, including the former prime ministers Ehud Barak (1999-2001) and Ehud Olmert (2006-2009) and the writer David Grossman, who signed a letter revealed by the Guardian: "The terrorism of Jewish criminals (...) serves well the current government's ideology of carrying out 'ethnic cleansing' in the territories (...) to facilitate their future annexation." On July 27, former chief of the General Staff Moshe Ya'alon accused Smotrich and Ben-Gvir of "encouraging Jewish pogromists," using a term heavily charged in Jewish collective memory, as President Isaac Herzog had in August 2024, when he denounced a "pogrom" against the Palestinians. For some deeply religious Israelis, these practices are the very negation of Jewish values. On July 30, Avraham Burg, former speaker of the Knesset and of the Jewish Agency, spoke of "neo-Jews" carrying out a "religious safari" in the West Bank designed "to do evil in the name of God." He concluded that, because of them, Israel had become "the greatest organized idolatry in the entire history of the Jewish faith." Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994), a leading scientific and moral figure in the Israeli academic world and editor of the Encyclopaedia Hebraica from 1956 to 1972, anticipated the current catastrophe as early as April 1968: "The corruption characteristic of every colonial regime would also prevail in the state of Israel." We have arrived at that point. After disgust and anger, it is now shame that overwhelms us. The word is a strong one, but today it is often used by Israelis themselves. Tamir Pardo, who served as director of the Mossad from 2011 to 2016, stated in April, after visiting attacked Palestinian villages: "My mother is a Holocaust survivor and what I saw here reminded me of the events of the previous century against the Jews. (...) I feel ashamed to be a Jew here." However, there is no reason for shame to rest solely on Jewish and Israeli consciences, as it is in fact the inaction of Western governments that allows this violence to be unleashed. This cowardice is all the more reprehensible given that it was the West that generated and shaped the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the Oslo process of the 1990s, including the partition plan voted at the United Nations in 1947. Without going back to the origins of the conflict, it must be observed that Emmanuel Macron is particularly accountable for the current situation. One year ago, he led a diplomatic initiative that resulted in the recognition of the State of Palestine by several G7 members and members of the UN Security Council. Can one recognize a state and allow its citizens to be murdered? Was that recognition merely an empty gesture, meant to settle all accounts? This summer, when did we hear the French government speak about the situation in Israel and Palestine? When another Palestinian baby died in the West Bank? No: It was when a foolish and misguided cultural boycott – which many of us denounced – targeted the DJ Barbara Butch on July 18 in Grenoble. Yet if France were to define a coherent political line, if the outraged conscience of the vast majority of French people were properly represented by the actions of its representatives, it is certain that these breaches would appear less legitimate and, as a result, would occur less frequently. What steps could be taken? With parliamentary elections looming in Israel at the end of October and in Palestine at the end of November, several levers are available. First, credible sanctions to undermine the Israeli government. The European market accounts for 30% of Israeli exports, which are entirely exempt from tariffs under the association agreement signed in 1995. France must join the countries calling for the suspension of the trade component of this agreement – Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Sweden – under Article 2, which concerns respect for human rights. It is also necessary to address Israeli voters directly. At present, all Israeli citizens benefit from visa-free travel to the Schengen area, including soldiers found guilty of war crimes, while an increasing number of European researchers and journalists are being turned away at Israel's borders. To awaken Israeli public opinion, the reputational cost of abuses committed in the West Bank and Gaza must become an actual constraint. It is therefore essential to suspend the visa exemption for Israeli citizens. A small segment of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's electorate may then realize that he is leading the country into a dead end, which could help bring about his downfall. Finally, with the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November and the presidential election set for early 2027, France should lead an international coalition demanding the release of the Fatah leader and polling frontrunner, Marwan Barghouti, who has been held in Israel since 2002. Without him, these elections would be null and void, stripped of any real meaning. There is no chance that this demand will be met by the supremacist government currently in power in Israel. However, if Israelis choose to pull back from the brink in October, the next governing coalition would be eager to reconnect with its European partners. The release of Barghouti should then be set as a minimum requirement for resuming dialogue. Disgust, anger and shame feed despair and distrust. These must urgently be turned into a lever for action.
