Just in case there are people using CensusMapper or the data API/{cancensus} that have not yet made it over to the other place.

Cross-posting with delay as I continue to wind down my activity here, just in case people were mislead thinking that “foreign buying has spiked” in B.C. — it’s not a thing.

Looks like one of the wrong stats got fixed, so that’s … progress? Would not want to get overly ambitious and fix all of the data issues at once. But anyway, wrong numbers is probably more of a symptom and only grazes the core of the issue here. Context: doodles.mountainmath.ca/post…

The {cmhc} R package version v0.2.9 is now on CRAN. This update includes fixes to accommodate changes to the CMHC HMIP back end, as well as more intelligent guessing of desired frequencies for snapshot data. mountainmath.github.io/cmhc/

It’s worse than that, it’s not just that there is no below-maker rental. It’s that there is less rental overall. We are in a housing crisis and would be a better off with an extra floor of market rental than without.
A Secured Rental Policy proposal is at public hearing next Nov. 12th, 3983-3991 West 10th Ave. Once again this is a 5-storey proposal where 6 is allowed, because the inclusionary zoning requirement for 6-storeys is unviable. 20% of 0 is zero. council.vancouver.ca/2024111…

Policies that reduce the overall amount of housing are regressive. Building more housing puts downward pressure on rents of existing rental, policies that prevent this result in a net transfer of income from tenants to existing landlords. doodles.mountainmath.ca/post…

Engaging read on the history of Sen̓áḵw through the forensic examination of news coverage of the time. Providing important context to the current public discourse around First Nation developments on a portion of this very site, and more broadly throughout the region.

Thanks for the kind words, Jens! Your data analysis was the centrepiece of the article. It changed the way I understand Toronto.

An excellent piece that encapsulates so much of what is wrong with housing in Toronto.

But Mike, you see, these taxes apply to very different groups of people. The $100/year extra hits hard-working homeowners while the $192,000 only hit people who want to enter the housing market, be it the entitled adult child wanting to move out or the parasitic in-migrant.

.@MikePMoffatt As an aside, another useful framing of this is that’s a “poop tax” on people who want to poop in the privacy of their own place. Bonus map of ~100k young adults confined to poop at their parents place in Vancouver. bureaucracybs.substack.com/p…
