#onthisday 1922 the Machine Gun Corps was disbanded.
Although there were companies and battalions formed as higher level organisation, the basic building block of the infantry branch was the section, each containing two sub-sections of two #VickersMG each.
#onthisday 1916 Private Andrew Sutherland of 56 Machine Gun Company, 19 Division was wearing this helmet when he received two bullets to the head at La Boiselle on the Somme. He survived and would go on to serve in the Royal Engineers and live until 1969.
It’s likely he had been issued the helmet merely days before!
From the amazing Graham Sacker collection. We will be uploading his service papers and medical documents on to our Vickers MG Supporter Corps Patreon archive in the coming days. patreon.com/vickersmg
