Is it harder to train a stayer than a sprinter or middle distance horse?
If not, why the constant push to evolve it into something else?
Is it just about managing ownerās expectations and patience needed?
Rather than shorten the race, why not flip the program and have the Derby in March and make current Derby Day headlined by the Australian Guineas, run that at 2000m?
Why not open the VRC Derby to NH-bred 3yo, give them a weight penalty for being half a year older, but keep the distance integrity if Australian breeders donāt value it? The Australian market chases NH-bred stayers already.
If it is so that training stayers is considered harder, will we see a further move away from staying races? We have seen this already with some of the time-honoured staying races on the program, will there be others that happen quickly?
Just a few but there are many more questions that should be asked and answered before flipping 170+ years of history. Iād hate to see this without excruciating detail of what analysis is done.
This is an interesting debate, one which needs to be extremely carefully considered before a decision is made. At this point I can see no compelling argument taking into account the fields that competed in Vase at Flemington or G1 Spring Champion in Sydney on Saturday. Impossible to say the Sydney race was stronger especially given the first 2 home were fillies. Flemington G2 had a full field, while Sydney had a small field despite racing for more money at G1 level.
Also the view offered in article below suggest if derby was shortened the 2 3yos who ran in cox plate would have run there insteadā¦.would they? Also suggests the 3rd in guineas would be in derby, itās been spelled, so I doubt it.
Given the exact race that they are suggesting the derby becomes already exists at G1 level, was run on Saturday with a field that not even the biggest proponent of the change could suggest was in anyway superior to the same G2 race at Flemington on the day, it seems hard to justify when considering this year alone.
Maybe we just have to accept that our juvenile G1 races are not going to meet the current race rating criteria that has been designed by breeders for breeders.
Personally I have no objection to changing the distance of the Derby if there is a real benefit, Iām yet to see anybody make a compelling argument. So at this point Iād say why throw away 150+ years of history on a whim.
One great point in the article, money rather than distance changes thinking. If the Derby was $5m does it matter if itās G1, G2,G3?
Iām sure of one thing the punters who are our customers and fund the industry donāt care.

This week, Living Legends had the honour of fulfilling the late trainer Mick Burlesā final wish ā to have his ashes laid to rest alongside his beloved champion, The Cleaner.
Mick and The Cleaner shared an extraordinary bond, capturing the hearts of racing fans across Australia with their remarkable journey from Tasmania to the national racing stage.
Before his passing in 2018, Mick expressed one final wish: that when The Cleanerās time came, they would be reunited.
Following The Cleanerās passing in 2025, we were privileged to welcome Mickās family and those closest to him to Living Legends for a touching ceremony, where his ashes were laid to rest beside his much-loved mate.
The special occasion was also captured by Channel 9 News, sharing the story of a partnership that extended far beyond the racetrack.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Mickās family for allowing us to be part of such a meaningful moment.
Two legends, reunited forever. ā¤ļø

Itās a common misconception that Thoroughbred foals are removed from their mothers too early. But as Price Bell from @millridgefarm explains, by weaning time theyāve spent months in a herd and are bigger, stronger and honestly a bit over hanging out with mom š

Would agree if they were "taking advantage". But I think they deserve the opportunity to take part in the race as much as anyone in this instance.

They need to change the entry rules for the Kozi. I think a big breeder winning it goes against the spirit of the concept
