So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

🚨DEFCON 1🚨 In a few hours, a critical vulnerability that affects ~70% of web sites will be disclosed. It allows an attacker to upload and execute arbitrary code. It's probably best if you stop browsing the internet for the rest of the week. xitter.cf/ThePHPF/status/2112633…
The PHP security team is giving advance notice: Upcoming security release Wed, Oct 21st 2026, 14:00UTC, two critical vulnerabilities, both rated CVSSv4 9.2. PHP users are encouraged to prepare to update. Earlier release if details become public or active exploit evidence.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
These are server-side PHP RCE vulnerabilities for which web hosts/admins should prepare to patch per official notice; general users face no direct need to stop browsing. PHP detected on ~69% of sites with known server-side language. php.net/archive/2026.p… w3techs.com/technologies/d… cert.europa.eu/publications/s… sansec.io/research/php2s… arstechnica.com/security/2026/…

Repeat after me. If you are NOT American, do not hold VOO or SPY. Buy the Irish-domiciled version instead. Same underlying companies. Same S&P 500. Difference: no US estate tax exposure, and the Irish fund reclaims US dividend withholding at 15% instead of you eating 30%. One ticker change. Six figures of difference to your family.

Big news: S&P Global has entered an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin. We started in 2015 with the vision of a secure, open financial system powered by blockchains and smart contracts. Ten years and $37 trillion in value transferred later, the standards and rails our team and community built carry major DeFi protocols and blockchain networks as well as the largest stablecoins and tokenized funds. With @spglobal, those standards and rails can now reach the benchmarks, risk frameworks, and institutional reach global markets already run on. Proud of the @OpenZeppelin team, everything we’ve accomplished, and everything we’ll continue to build together! openzeppelin.com/news/spglob…

Today, @FinCENnews issued a final rule that permanently removes the requirement for U.S. companies and U.S. persons to report beneficial ownership information. FinCEN today also announced that it will delete previously reported information by U.S. persons from the beneficial ownership information database.

It's getting really bad. WZRD ETF by Larry Benedict is down -97,58% since inception.
There is so much hype around the new Market Wizards book. This ETF is a good reminder that even the "wizards" can lose their edge. WZRD ETF, launched by Larry Benedict, featured in Market Wizards book, is down 90% in a year.

Allow me, please, to expand upon this analogy. Big banks are Tywin Lannister. Incredibly smart and ruthless and the one with the most money/power. But also arrogant and occasionally reckless. The community banks are the Tyrells. Contains both doofuses (Mace Tyrell) and incredibly sharp and strategic thinkers (Olenna Tyrell). Not powerful in terms of force, but powerful (in the aggregate) in terms of wealth and influence. Banking-as-a-Service is Renly Baratheon. Appealing on the surface, but not as robust or sustainable over the long run as you might assume. Crypto is Stannis Baratheon. Formidable, unyielding, and tactically brilliant, but also utterly unwilling to compromise, not a great strategic thinker, and not well liked by the masses. Here's what's happened over the last couple of years: - Crypto murders BaaS and takes its army (fintech developers), fracturing its relationship with community banks in the process. - Crypto attacks the big banks. Notches some early wins (GENIUS), but, in typical fashion, stubbornly refuses to back down at all and goes all-in for the big win (yield). - Big banks ally themselves with community banks against crypto and turn the tide in the battle (Clarity). The Battle of Blackwater Bay isn't decided yet, but the Tyrells have certainly tipped the scales.
Everyone always assumes it’s big banks. Meanwhile community banks are quite powerful:

'We are losing too much money, and we can no longer hype the AGI. What should we do?' 'Let's invent a story that our AI escaped the sandbox and hacked something!' 'But Anthropic already invented this story. Who will believe us now?' 'Right. Let's ask another AI company, not competing with us, to confirm that it was hacked by our AI, and then we both fought for humanity's future using a Chinese model. Win-win.' 'Brilliant, boss!'

I have information that Anthropic scraped my github twitter reddit discord and facebook posts for the development of it's Fable model. To do this they developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale scraping and obfuscation of their actions.
We have information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic’s Fable for the development of its K3 model. To do this they developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale distillation against U.S. models, allowing them to quickly switch between multiple methods of access to avoid detection. Moonshot AI has also acquired GB300-equipped servers and has accessed GB300s in Thailand, likely to train its AI models.   The United States strongly supports the free and fair development of AI, including a thriving competitive ecosystem that spans frontier models, specialized systems, open-source frameworks, and open-weight models. Legitimate AI distillation used to create smaller, more efficient models plays a vital role in this open innovation ecosystem. However, large-scale, covert industrial distillation aimed at stealing proprietary U.S. technology and undermining American research is unacceptable.
