Greece continues to treat the Athens FIR as sovereign territory without any legal basis, while casting itself as the injured party
Under customary international law and the Chicago Convention, a state’s sovereignty over airspace extends no farther than its territorial sea. Greece’s territorial sea is 6 nautical miles. The band between 6 and 10 nautical miles is therefore international airspace. A broader airspace claim that does not match the breadth of the territorial sea has no basis in the Convention or in general practice. In a report to Congress, the U.S. State Department noted that airspace coincides with the territorial sea, that the United States recognizes Greek airspace only out to 6 nautical miles, and that Washington and Athens do not share a view on the extent of that airspace.
The Athens FIR is a technical area designated by ICAO for the provision of flight information and alerting services to civil aviation. It confers neither sovereignty, nor authority over military aircraft, nor a right to require prior clearance. Under Article 3 of the Chicago Convention, state aircraft are not subject to the flight-plan regime. Their presence in international airspace is not a violation of Greek sovereignty.
Greek media and official statements use these flights to create a sense of threat among international audiences and to cast Greece as the aggrieved party at the diplomatic table. By turning unrecognized claims into sensational headlines, Greece generates artificial tensions in the region and undermines the basis for dialogue.

🇹🇷 Türkiye's defense industry has surpassed $100 BILLION in military projects, as Ankara rapidly expands its ability to develop and export weapons without relying on foreign suppliers.
The country's defense exports reached $11.3 BILLION over the past 12 months, with exports in the first ten months of 2026 jumping 61% compared with the same period last year.
And the scale of the transformation is enormous.
Since 2002, the number of defense projects has surged from just 62 to 1,500, while the number of companies operating in the sector has grown from 56 to more than 4,000.
Domestic production now accounts for over 80% of defense content, compared with just 20% in 2002, while annual industry turnover has risen from $1.1 billion to $25 billion.
Türkiye is also investing $3.5 billion annually in defense research and development, with more than 135,000 people directly employed across the sector.
The news comes as the Mecca Agreement signals closer Gulf security cooperation, while declining confidence in U.S. security opens a lucrative new market for Turkish weapons.

So you've learned that it doesn't matter whether it was before or after 1982.
Now,
Anticipating that the limits of territorial waters might be extended in the future, the Arbitral Tribunal created enclaves for the islands within the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea.
Do you not see the islands that have been enclaved within the French continental shelf?
The situation will be the same in the Aegean. Islands located within the Turkish Continental Shelf can only be enclosed by their own territorial waters; they cannot generate any other effect! ⤵️
What is truly pitiful is your desperate attempt to twist the 1977 UK-France decision to fit Ankara’s unilateral narrative.
In the 1977 case, the Arbitral Tribunal explicitly granted the Channel Islands a 12 nautical mile continental shelf enclave. In 1977, 12 miles was the maximum territorial sea limit. Τherefore, the court gave them the maximum possible effect under the international law of that era. It never gave them "zero effect" or stripped them of their rights.
"Small islands on the wrong side?". These are not isolated, uninhabited rocks. They are a massive, continuous, and densely populated island chain with independent economic life, forming a political and geographical totality with the Greek mainland.
International jurisprudence firmly establishes that substantial, inhabited islands enjoy full or substantial effect in maritime delimitation. Courts adjust lines for equity. They never legally erase entire inhabited populations to satisfy a neighbor's "Blue Homeland" fiction.
Article 121 of UNCLOS makes no exceptions for "semi-enclosed seas". Inhabited islands have full maritime zones, period.
Υou can hide behind arrogant phrasing, as much as yu want, but the actual case law and Customary International Law do not support your revisionism.

In terms of geography and the law of the sea, the Aegean islands are, in fact, islands isolated from the Greek mainland! To dispute this clear distinction is to demonstrate a lack of geographical knowledge...
The ICJ's primary thesis is anchored in the "Equidistance/Relevant Circumstances" methodology, guided by the overarching principle that "the land dominates the sea" and that the final solution must achieve an equitable result.
🚫 The Anti-Cut-Off Principle (Non-Encroachment)
The ICJ’s jurisprudence strictly dictates that a maritime boundary line must not block or "cut off" a state's mainland coast from its natural projection into the sea. Giving full weight to Greek islands situated right in front of the Anatolian coast (like Lesbos, Chios, Samos, and Rhodes) would completely engulf Türkiye's maritime access. To prevent this "cut-off effect," the ICJ routinely reduces the impact of such islands.
✂️ "Half-Effect" or "Enclaving" of Islands.
The ICJ has established clear precedents showing that islands do not enjoy equal status to mainlands when they distort an equitable boundary line. The Court typically handles foreign islands located close to another country's mainland in two ways:
• Enclaving (Cepping): The islands are given no continental shelf or EEZ of their own. They are completely surrounded by the other nation's maritime zone, allowed only a narrow belt of territorial waters (e.g., 6 nautical miles). A prime precedent is the 1977 Anglo-French Continental Shelf Arbitration, where the UK’s Channel Islands (located right off the coast of France) were enclaved to give France its fair share of the continental shelf.
• Half-Effect: The Court calculates the boundary twice—once ignoring the islands, and once including them—and then draws the final line exactly halfway between the two results, significantly weakening the island's distorting effect (as seen in the 1985 Libya-Malta case)
📐 Proportionality of Coastal Lengths
Türkiye's extensive and highly indented Anatolian coastline is a significant asset under ICJ doctrine. In cases like Black Sea (Romania v. Ukraine, 2009), the ICJ firmly reiterated that the distribution of maritime space must reasonably reflect the ratio of the coastal lengths of the parties.
A geometric line that grants Greece the vast majority of the Aegean seabed despite Türkiye’s massive coastal presence would fail the Court's final proportionality check.
In a hypothetical adjudication, the ICJ would not award Greece a sweeping boundary based blindly on its outer islands, nor would it completely wipe Greece out of the central Aegean. The Court would most likely draw a median line between the two mainlands and treat the Greek islands adjacent to Turkiye as enclaves, granting them territorial waters but stripping them of the capacity to generate a vast continental shelf at the expense of the Turkish mainland.
Justice...
Your map perfectly illustrates the geostrategic fiction of "Blue Homeland," but it carries zero legal weight.
In the 1977 UK v. France case, 12 nautical miles was the maximum territorial sea limit accepted by both states at the time. Is that clear? By granting the Channel Islands a 12 mile continental shelf enclave, the Tribunal did not strip them of their rights. It gave them the maximum possible effect allowed under the international law of that specific era. It did not create a "reduced" zone. It secured their full sovereign limits.
And I repeat...The Channel Islands are an isolated British outpost sitting deep inside a French gulf, right against the French mainland. The Greek islands in the East Aegean and the Dodecanese are not isolated enclaves. They form a massive, unbroken, and continuous geographic and political totality that links the Greek mainland directly to Crete and Cyprus. International law treats continuous, populated island chains with full maritime effect, precisely because they are not "geographical anomalies."
Υou assume the Aegean seabed is already the "Turkish Continental Shelf" and that Greek islands are merely sitting "inside" it. International law dictates that boundaries are determined by overlapping entitlements. Under Article 121 of UNCLOS and Customary Law, large, densely populated islands with full economic life (like Rhodes, Lesbos, Chios, and Samos) generate their own full continental shelf and EEZ entitlements. They do not sit "inside" your shelf. Τheir presence legally restricts it.
A country cannot unilaterally draw a line down the middle of a sea, erase hundreds of inhabited islands with hundreds of thousands of permanent citizens, and call it "equity." International courts adjust lines for minor distortions. They do not legally ethnically cleanse entire sovereign populations to satisfy an expansionist map.
This debate is academically and legally settled. Goodbye.

A Pitiful State of Affairs...
They have no knowledge whatsoever about the UK-France decision, yet they still have an opinion on it!
The 1977 UK-France Arbitral Tribunal decision was reaffirmed in 2011 and accepted by the parties.
In numerous landmark rulings, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and arbitral tribunals have declined to grant an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) effect to islands located on the "wrong" side of the median line—that is, within the continental shelf of another state.
Particularly in semi-enclosed seas such as the Aegean, there is no legal precedent that would allow a coastal state to use small islands to block another state’s access to the high seas or to encroach upon its continental shelf (CS)/Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Replying to @adem_5361
Well... This example proves you are either deeply misinformed or intentionally manipulating the ruling.
I suppose you bother to check the geography which is completely different...or not?The Channel Islands are British islands located deep inside a French gulf, right against the French coast, while the UK mainland is far away on the other side of the English Channel. In contrast, the Aegean is a continuous, unified sea where Greek islands and the Greek mainland form a geographic totality facing the Turkish coast. There is no "enclavement" of a foreign nation inside your gulfs.
The Arbitral Tribunal explicitly granted the Channel Islands a 12 nautical mile continental shelf enclave to the north and west. In 1977, 12 miles was the maximum territorial sea allowed. Τherefore, the court gave them the maximum possible effect under the international law of that specific era. It did not strip them of their rights.
Furthermore...the Channel Islands case was decided under the 1958 Geneva Convention. Today, maritime delimitation is governed by UNCLOS and Customary International Law, which heavily favors the security, political unity, and economic continuity of inhabited islands.
Nice try for one more time. How many more failed attempts at twisting legal precedents will it take before you finally tell your audience the truth about the islands? You have become so obsessed with them that you are forced to invent legal terms and geographical definitions that don't even exist in international law, just to feed your illusions.
