DON'T: read another weepy conversation w/ Michael Walzer where he belatedly admits to being wrong while also doubling down on being wrong DO: Read this piece by me & @shaabiranks from 2023 where we critique Walzer/Just War Theory & the law of war re: Gaza nplusonemag.com/online-only/…

“‘This is a story about resilience, and hope,’ affirms Pawel. The UC Regents, battered from the right for being too woke and from the left for collaborating with Trumpism, will breathe a sigh of relief when they (or their PR departments) read this book." proteanmag.com/2026/10/10/in…

our intrepid associate editor @jake_romm was on @hasanthehun stream discussing his work with the @HindRFoundation:
Hasan Piker's full interview with Jake Romm from the Hind Rajab Foundation: What is the Hind Rajab Foundation? (1:05-7:05) Has it gotten more difficult to catch these war criminals in the act? Why do they post their war crimes anyway? (7:20-10:16) Hind Rajab’s alleged killer is walking free in the United States??? What kind of investigation did y'all conduct? Is there evidence? (10:30-21:05) What about getting Bibi prosecuted? (21:06-25:20) ISRAEL TINY NATION! (25:30-29:00) The Western World's culpability (29:10-34:45) Jake's parting words and Hasan's reflection on their conversation (34:46-37:21)

Tony Platt reviews the new book by Miriam Pawel, “California Dreams: The Making and Remaking of the University of California.” Pawel’s focus on a few alumni, he writes, elides both radical traditions and unethical practices inextricable from UC history. proteanmag.com/2026/10/10/in…

The Atlantic, supposed beacon of free speech and liberal principles, has published 30+ articles on Hasan Piker and zero about Israel’s unprecedented killing of 230+ journalists in Gaza. Some are saying it’s because it’s run by a former volunteer IDF prison guard but who’s to say

once again, there is no need to indulge Roko's Basilisk discourse about AI safety from Berkeley polycules when any Palestinian will tell you what unsafe AI looks like *right now*
A U.S. charity in Gaza is worried that teachers at its schools might stray from a curriculum it says promotes peace and tolerance, so it plans to record classroom conversations and use artificial intelligence to flag speech deemed “hateful” or “inciting.” apnews.com/article/gaza-chil…

Mehdi I promise I would never—even in jest—refer to you as a savvy politics understander
I’m losing my mind at these arguments. Is the argument not to protest or criticize Mamdani? Or call for disbanding the SRG? NO! The argument is that it is dumb and dishonest and offensive to scream that he is complicit in a genocide at a vigil, and to claim he supports killing kids. The strawmenners are out in force today.

this is a truly bizarre review, written with clear ideological motive but totally unwilling to spell it out
The Atlantic
@TheAtlanticSep 30
NAZA, a provocative Israeli documentary, should make viewers think about their own moral parameters—instead, it distances them from the war in Gaza, @GalBeckerman writes. theatlantic.com/culture/2026…

"Moby Dick" is not just the great American novel. It's also the best TV show of the 21st century.

“As an art critic, [Berger] had a unique ability to describe the great paintings of the past in a way which made his readers feel the canon belonged to them, that it was theirs to do what they wanted with.” – Tom Overton proteanmag.com/2026/09/23/to…

exciting news for fellow John Berger fans: upcoming are a new biography, new editions of books and novels, and all sorts of Bergeriana. Bergerarcana. Bergerama. biographer Tom Overton here tells some stories re: Berger as a person… somehow he’s both avuncular AND grandfatherly
Andrew Holter interviews Tom Overton, author of a new biography, “John Berger: From Life” (@VersoBooks). In a fascinating exchange, Overton discusses his friendship with Berger, the biography's literary approach, Berger on Palestine, and future releases. proteanmag.com/2026/09/23/to…

If there’s anything “Woke 1.0” about this it’s the backlash from all the people whining that basic linguistic clarity is “language policing”
Nate Silver
@NateSilver538Sep 24
The whole "don't anthropomorphize AI" thing is very Woke 1.0. People trying to police language that is perfectly natural in some cases and ending up in a web of contradictions.
