It is commonly associated with Meldon Mitchell, a Marine Corps artist involved in the project. It was first issued on USMC shelter halves during the Korean War era. In 1959 the reversible Mitchell helmet cover became standard and went on to see widespread use in Vietnam with Marines, Army, and Navy personnel. It was never adopted as a full official combat uniform, but troops and Special Forces often had shirts, trousers, jackets, and boonie hats made from salvaged or purchased Mitchell fabric by tailors in Okinawa and Vietnam.
