this makes so much sense and im surprised people in MTP land didnt do it earlier! big fan of one line code changes
Multi-Token Prediction (MTP) can be done much better.
🚀 Turn out,you can recover the gradient for KL self-distillation to next-token prediction (NTP) for free without ever computing the KL. You just need a one-line code change:
h_ntp += h_mtp.detach() - h_mtp
Soft Multi-Token Prediction is pretty much a free lunch for MTP.

Your LLM agent has to think out loud, token by token, before it can search, run code, or act in the world.
We humans don’t. We ponder in silence and speak when it matters.
Human language was never meant to be the limit of machine thought.
Introducing 🌗Hybrid Reasoning Agents
- Think in latent space, act through text
- Two modes, one unified multi-turn flow
- No black box, fully readable latent thoughts
- Any LLM can become a HybridAgent

It's now clear that alignment is critical and won't be solved behind the closed doors of a handful of frontier labs.
So today we're launching the Open Alignment Initiative, led by @Thom_Wolf @huggingface and asking to be part of the "embedded evaluators" program that @DarioAmodei just committed to.
Let's make AI safer by making it more transparent!
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

Generative models can’t discover what they can’t reach.
We’re excited to introduce ActFlow: a continued pre-training scheme that actively expands the valid design space reachable by flow and diffusion models. We call this generable set expansion — a new learning principle for out-of-distribution generative modeling, and a step toward evolvable search spaces for scientific discovery. (1/5)

understanding reasoning from pretraining to post-training
standard LLM pipelines eval RL post-training largely in isolation from the massive pretraining phase. Instead, the authors quantify pretraining-to-RL interface by using chess as a controlled testbed to isolate how pretraining scale shapes RL performance.
Training is performed sequentially across a complete pipeline. At each stage, the model is first pretrained on human chess games, then SFT on synthetic reasoning traces, and finally uses RL on chess puzzles with verifiable rewards
They test this across 36 compute combos with models ranging from 5M to 1B parameters. Some findings are:
1) pretraining loss strongly predicts post-RL performance; the rate of RL improvement grows approximately linearly with number of pretraining tokens.
2) Mechanistically, RL does not simply sharpen existing SFT preferences; on hard puzzles, it surfaces correct moves that were nearly absent, a predictive pattern that also transfers to a 1B language model trained on math text!

This is literally Jensen’s first post on X, and it couldn’t be more significant
Together with Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, Hugging Face, IBM, Mozilla, Palantir and others, NVIDIA argues that open models allow companies and countries to inspect, modify and run AI on their own infrastructure.
That means:
-Less dependence on a few AI providers
-More control over data and models
-Cheaper, specialized AI systems
-Better access for cybersecurity researchers
-Greater technological sovereignty
The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.
And I completely agree. Open source must remain (legal). And it's great that we have Jensen on our side!
For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter.
AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.
Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.

Diffusion (or flow) makes for excellent policies, but training them with RL is notoriously hard: BPTT is unstable, RL over diffusion blows up the horizon. In our new paper, we show how we can optimize flow matching actors by using "one weird trick" -- "approximate" the Jacobian of the flow denoising process with the identity matrix. 👇
