We are working towards using this system to fix tons of broken citations on Wikipedia. Excited about translating our research into real-world impact!
The Internet is littered with millions of dead links. Now, a team led by Harsha Madhyastha has found a fix for many of them 💡 The system, called FABLE, was presented at the 2023 ACM Internet Measurement Conference 👏 🔗 viterbischool.usc.edu/news/2… @what_007 @USCViterbi

This is work that my student Anish (@nyayachavadi) presented at the Internet Measurement Conference last month. Anish did this work for his senior year Honors Thesis, and he is currently applying to PhD programs.
"Characterizing 'Permanently Dead' Links on Wikipedia" Broken external references on Wikipedia which lack archived copies are marked as “permanently dead". But, many previously dysfunctional seem to work fine today. ( Nyayachavadi et al, 2022) dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3…

What a remarkable story! ... A reminder of all the talent that goes untapped due to the lack of opportunity and appropriate guidance.
Tani Adewumi fled Nigeria at age 6. He lived in a homeless shelter at age 7. He became a chess champion in the U.S. at age 8. The Adewumis welcomed me into their lives wholeheartedly via zoom. Here is their wonderful story @espn: espn.com/espn/story/_/id/291…

I serve on program committees hoping to read papers that make me wish I had written them. But, it is often the case that papers I review make me wish the authors had devoted their time and energy on a more worthy problem.

I don't mean to look down upon others' work, but given the reality that problem selection is HARD, it seems useful to have venues for papers that only describe problems -- making the case for why they are significant and non-trivial -- without any expectations of solving them.

This is an under-appreciated benefit of academia IMO. You have much more control over how busy you are, and so, have more time to think.
IMO the most toxic side effect of chronic "busyness" & meeting bloat is almost no time to ... think. As my work shifted over the years from tactical to predominantly strategic, that required much more time in deep thought, often about higher level themes on longer time scales.

Congrats to my student @paivaspol who was awarded the IRTF's Applied Networking Research Prize for our SIGCOMM'17 paper (web.eecs.umich.edu/~harshavm…) on speeding up the mobile web! He'll be presenting our work at one of the IETF meetings this year.

The answer is likely service-specific, but wondering if others have any experience in working around lack of cellular connectivity.

Probably many computer vision challenges involved here, but this application also seems quite hard in terms of the need for low latency. teapaw.org/techreview/status/8380…
