Put simply, I've found that there is a formula for success for publishing climate change research in the most prestigious and widely-read scientific journals and unfortunately this formula also makes the research less useful.

Would the rich pay more in tax if public opinion decided? My new article "Taxing the 1 per cent: Public Opinion vs Public Policy" is now available in FirstView at @BJPolS. (cambridge.org/core/journals/…). Here's a thread 🧵 on the main findings

most politicians are all about “public safety” unless safety would require less inequality. the unattainable holy grail of “law and order” politics is therefore claiming to produce “safety” without improving the material conditions of people's lives.

A lot of outlets have been telling the story of Tony Bennett marching with MLK. But have you ever heard the story about how “wokeness,” DEI, Jesus, an actual anti-racist, 2 church choirs & 1 of the greatest dance moves of all time got Tony Bennett into show biz? A thread

Of course that's your contention. You're a first-year climate policy associate. You just got finished reading a classic environmental treatise—Arthur Pigou probably—and you're convinced that taxes are the most efficient way to address negative externalities.

Because here is the thing. Every. Single. Journalist. who was there (and there were many, from major outlets all over Europe and the world) that I spoke to, said "my editor refuses to print any story critical of economic growth." Every. Single. One. #BeyondGrowth2023 7/

We just witnessed a political massacre and a coup d’état by the North Carolina Supreme Court. Five Republicans—all white—with two African-Americans dissenting, decided to be the focal point of voter suppression in North Carolina.

This is an important fact to see: investments in which crimes to look for determine to a significant extent which people are prosecuted. Government spends relatively few resources looking for the crimes of the rich, but tens of billions on cops for drug war and homelessness, etc.

Why isn't Congress delivering solutions that help families & workers? Because policymakers write bills to satisfy the scorekeepers, not their constituents. I close out this month's @TheProspect issue with a personal story & some solutions. A thread 1/11 prospect.org/economy/2023-04…

As Texas Gov Abbot prepares to pardon a white man & convicted murderer for killing a peaceful BLM protestor—Texas sentences a Black man to 70 years in prison for “spitting at police” to “make an example out of him.”😳 Systemic white supremacy is thriving in the GOP. Horrific.

Dear Journalists covering tomorrow's IPCC report release, First of all, THANK YOU. Second of all, here are a couple of questions you should not be asking climate scientists, ever ever ever.

We want to follow a pathway with rapidly emission reductions, then CDR actually has value. This is the "we need both" world. But you should never say "we need CDR", because, what we actually need is emission reductions. *It is the emission reductions which give CDR value* 3/

Behavioral econ is cool, but once we admitted people are irrational, it seems wrong to end up with 50x more work on "we must help people with tiny nudges," vs. "Oh shit, firms must be taking advantage of people like crazy with this stuff."

Here's the story of a city's response to spiking gun deaths. Of READI Chicago—an ambitious effort to build & study a program of jobs & CBT for the men most likely to shoot or be shot. Of HUGE success by some measures (64% fewer shooting & homicide arrests!) & no impact by others.

Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 1006 (!) There’s an awful lot of Covid confusion & misinformation out there, particularly around these three topics: masks, vaccines, and home tests. Let’s look at them in today's thread. (1/24)

To get more specific with this: I think that corporate/business political interests like to appropriate the language, rhetoric, and public image of economics so people rail against economists when they're mad at big business or entrenched capital.
