next generation of @waymo booking flows rolling out. lots of cool new tech here: flexible server-driven platform, fully native SwiftUI + Compose app components.

I’m obviously heavily invested in native iOS development, but I’d like to keep an open mind. Any folks willing to share a success story for transitioning a native app to React Native / Flutter?
I read this tweet and laughed. We regularly come into companies that have full, dedicated native app teams, rebuild their entire (10+ year old) apps in React Native, and pass up their native teams who are still struggling to ship features. Then ship to the App Store / Google Play Store and improve the overall star rating for the apps. (The *best* possible outcome is when the native devs enthusiastically embrace React Native ... because they tend to make amazing RN devs. I was a native iOS dev prior to RN!) I get that my team is particularly good at RN, but if your team is going to slow down their feature iteration speed and destroy their app quality just because they switch to React Native, it's really not the tech stack's fault.

We’re hiring iOS folks at @Waymo to help grow our small rider apps team! We have a modern Swift code base, and are currently migrating to SwiftUI. If you’re passionate about iOS UI or infra and want to work with super cool robot cars, please apply! waymo.com/joinus/4929886/

Alright SwiftUI experts — I need some help. Imagine a SwiftUI view hierarchy like this: Host └─ UIViewControllerRepresentable └─ UIHostingController └─ Child How can Child’s preference keys be visible to Host? NavigationStack seems to do this internally.

I’d love to hear from folks who have used TCA in a large project. Do you regret it? Have you found the benefits to outweigh the upfront barrier to entry for a team? github.com/pointfreeco/swift…

Regardless of what happens to Twitter, I’ll always have very fond memories of the years I’ve spent here. Twitter has singlehandedly influenced the course of my career. Grateful for all of the incredible folks I’ve met through this silly bird app.

Unlike music, location-based background tasks do work as expected when updating Live Activities. Note that if your location authorization is only "authorizedWhenInUse", the Dynamic Island will force you to coexist with a system-provided location indicator.
Unfortunately it seems like apps won’t be able to update their Live Activities if they’re active in the background by playing music. Will limit the interactivity I was planning for @PosturePalApp a bit unfortunately.

For folks curious about Live Activities, here’s what they look like when they’re updated with an alert configuration on devices other than a 14 Pro. Unfortunately the background material seemingly can’t be customized, unlike the Lock Screen.

It’s fascinating (and a little saddening) to see the gatekeeping around design w.r.t. Dynamic Island and “the blobbification”. Sometimes it’s okay to be playful with design. Losing sight of delight results in a sub-par experience. Find a balance between joy & utility.

Ran into a sneaky SwiftUI bug that was a pain to track down. Turns out an overlay or background with conditional content prevents preference keys from propagating from children. Gist: gist.github.com/jwilling/7b9…

Any SwiftUI performance magicians have insight into the behavior of `drawingGroup()`? I'd expect it to enhance animation performance on a large collection of shapes, but it's strictly worse, as you might be able to notice in the demo. Gist: gist.github.com/jwilling/89e…
