In April 2022, a 12-year-old Russian girl named Masha Moskalyova was told in art class to draw a picture supporting russian troops in Ukraine.
Instead, she drew a Ukrainian mother protecting her child as russian missiles flew toward them. On the Ukrainian flag she wrote, “Glory to Ukraine.”
On the russian flag: “No to war. No to Putin.” Her school reported her to the authorities. Police began investigating her father, Alexei Moskalyov, a single father who had raised Masha largely on his own.
They searched his social media and discovered posts criticizing russia’s invasion and documenting russian atrocities in Bucha.
In December 2022, around a dozen russian security officers raided their home. They ransacked it, seized their computers, phones, and savings.
Alexei later said that during interrogations, officers beat him and slammed his head against the wall and floor. They blasted the russian national anthem at full volume while questioning him.
Eventually, the regime charged him with repeatedly “discrediting” the russian military because of his anti-war social-media posts.
Masha was taken away from him and placed in a state “social rehabilitation” center. Alexei was sentenced to two years in a penal colony.
He later described horrific conditions there: a tiny punishment cell roughly two meters long, freezing temperatures, rats crawling out of the sewer, and days when he was forced to stand for as long as 16 hours because the bunk was locked against the wall.
Meanwhile, his daughter wrote to him. “Dad, don’t give up.” “You are my hero.” They were separated for more than a year and a half.
On October 15, 2024, Alexei finally walked out of prison. Masha was waiting for him. Five days later, they fled russia. They first escaped to Armenia and applied for a German humanitarian visa.
After waiting for more than a year, their case stalled when Germany suspended the relevant humanitarian admission program. Then France stepped in. In March 2026, Masha and Alexei received French humanitarian visas and flew to Paris. And on July 17, 2026, France granted them political asylum.
Today, Masha is drawing again and hopes to pursue art. She also writes and has spoken out in support of russian political prisoners.
When asked whether, knowing everything that happened afterward, she would still have made that drawing, Masha said she would. “One only lives once.”
One drawing. A child saying no to war. And for that, the russian state destroyed their home, separated a father from his daughter, imprisoned him, and drove them both into exile.

In 1838, Edgar Allan Poe wrote a story about four men stranded at sea who became so desperate for food that they decided one of them had to die.
He gave the unfortunate victim a name.
Richard Parker.
Forty-six years later, something happened in the Atlantic Ocean that bore an almost unbelievable resemblance to Poe's fictional story.
On July 5, 1884, a British yacht called the Mignonette was sailing toward Australia when a massive wave struck the vessel roughly 1,600 miles from the Cape of Good Hope. The yacht sank within minutes, leaving its four crew members adrift in a small open lifeboat.
They had almost nothing to eat or drink.
Captain Thomas Dudley, first mate Edwin Stephens, sailor Edmund Brooks, and 17-year-old cabin boy Richard Parker survived on two small tins of turnips, a turtle they managed to catch, and whatever rainwater they could collect.
After nearly three weeks at sea, their supplies were gone. Parker had become seriously ill after drinking seawater and was lying helpless in the boat.
The men began discussing whether one of them should be sacrificed so the others could survive. Brooks refused to participate, but Dudley and Stephens eventually decided to kill Parker.
On July 25, they took the boy's life and used his body for food.
Four days later, a passing German vessel rescued the three surviving men.
When they returned to England, Dudley and Stephens were charged with murder. Their case became one of the most famous legal decisions in British history, establishing that necessity was not a defense for killing an innocent person simply to survive.
Both men were sentenced to death, although their sentences were later commuted to six months in prison.
The similarities to Poe's novel were so striking that a Dublin newspaper discussed them in December 1884, while the murder case was still attracting attention.
Poe had been dead for 35 years, and there's no evidence of any connection between his fictional character and the real Richard Parker.
Yet somehow, 46 years before a 17-year-old boy lost his life at sea, Edgar Allan Poe had written almost the same tragedy and given his fictional victim the exact same name.

Esattamente 7 anni fa, oggi, @matteosalvinimi firmava un patto di cooperazione tra Lega e Russia Unita, il partito di Putin. A marzo 2022, nonostante l'invasione russa dell'Ucraina, ha scelto di rinnovarlo fino al 2027. È inaccettabile per il Paese presidente del G7 avere un putinista come vicepremier. Contro Salvini abbiamo depositato una mozione di sfiducia: spieghi questa indecenza o si dimetta.

E in Brasile come in Italia mesi fa ha pesato nel voto ancora il voto dei giovani (eclatante la vittoria di domenica del partito degli studenti in Serbia) che si riconoscono nei valori di libertà e di democrazia che Trump disconosce quotidianamente
