Scott Snyder is a Democrat who doesn’t like Trump, but “Absolute Batman” is not a woke book. Rolling Stone’s argument that this book is “progressive” is based on the fact that instead of Batman’s parents being killed in a mugging (a kind of crime right-wingers are concerned about), his father was killed in a random mass shooting at the zoo (a kind of crime left-wingers are concerned about). Otherwise, writer Scott Snyder has said that he intentionally keeps overt political theming out of the book to keep it welcoming to as large an audience as possible. I have a pretty sharp sense of woke, and I don’t like it, and I have a diminishing tolerance for it. I do not like some of the choices Snyder has made in “Absolute Batman” for non-political reasons — his preoccupation with turning the Joker into a supernatural monster is something I do not agree with. But I do not consider this book to be woke or left-wing propaganda. That said, I would not read “Absolute Superman” or “Absolute Martian Manhunter.”
