Recently attended an in-person handheld game console hackathon. I wrote a raycaster by hand. Someone wearing a “I ❤️ slop” tshirt saw mine and said “oh I wrote a ray caster too!”. They showed me. It was a ray *tracer* and claude did all the work. The person didn’t know basic graphics terms. They couldn’t answer basic questions about how it worked, could only talk about their prompting harness. Sad how AI is ruining the craft and community for people that actually like to program and have spent their lives getting good at it.

I found a slightly clearer analog photo of the artwork from this post, so I decided to scan it.
If you zoom in, you can see the technique I was using back then. I cut out pieces of adhesive vinyl (what we'd call Cricut vinyl today) and layered them on top of each other to create the finished artwork.
Now that I've got presbyopia, I seriously doubt I could pull this off anymore. LOL. Just imagining having to do all that hair detail again sounds like absolute hell.
You can also clearly see that every single letter was cut by hand. I even applied screentone (the kind used in manga) over the title logo to create a gradient effect.
Looking back, I can't believe how much unnecessary work I put into this. I'm pretty sure I could've at least printed the lettering with the printers we had back then.
Oh, and one more interesting detail: at the time I made this, during the location test (an arcade revenue test conducted while the game is still in development), Nina didn't have that yellow sash around her waist yet.
Wow, this is from over 30 years ago… Where did you find it?
You can see the clock from Japanese TV in the top-left corner, so this must have been recorded when it appeared on some television program.
By the way, this wasn’t a normal drawing. Back then I’d gotten bored with conventional art materials, and I became obsessed with making artwork using what we call “cutting sheets” in Japan—basically the kind of single-color adhesive vinyl you might think of as Cricut vinyl overseas.
I would cut each piece by hand with a design knife, layer the pieces on top of one another, and separate the colors that way, almost like making an animation cel. I used that technique for all kinds of character art and concept art.
And it wasn’t just the characters. Every letter and logo on this piece was also cut out freehand with a design knife and assembled by hand. I used to say, “Not using a ruler gives it more character.”
In retrospect, I probably should have used a ruler.
One thing I liked about the technique was that the material was very resistant to UV and didn’t really deteriorate even after several years.
The downside was that finishing a single piece took an incredible amount of time. Areas with lots of tonal variation—especially things like gradients in the hair—were absolute hell to make.
And the board itself was huge. It was B0 size: 1030 × 1456 mm, or about 40.5 × 57.3 inches. So you needed a pretty large workspace just to make one.
After it was finished, it was displayed at an arcade during a location test—basically one of those pre-release, guerrilla-style tests where we would put the game into an arcade and see how much revenue it generated.
I later heard that, in the end, a Japanese fan who desperately wanted the piece was allowed to take it home.

The new BitLink DC Adapter and Dongle from @8bitmods are basically magic! These are a great set of accessories whether you already own a VMU Pro or not. I’ve been long overdue for a wireless controller for my DC, and this is definitely the WHOLE package!

Here's a new cheat code for the *Time Bokan Series* game for Saturn:
- On the main menu, highlight the top item.
- Hold Left+X+Z and tap C. Keep holding Left, X, and Z.
Now there should be a "Stage Change" badge on the vehicle select screen, plus the 3 bonus vehicles.
