Without Steve there would never have been a YPQ.
There are few people who pour that much of their heart and soul into something so impactful, especially without ulterior motives.
Be like Steve, read more weird stories and support the indie community.
You'd think an author would know how to end a chapter, but here I am getting all in my feelings. This'll be a long post - our wee indie book box is saying goodbye, but we aren't!
Almost 3 years ago I was posting first chapter impressions of hundreds of indie books when I got a DM from someone asking how I managed that volume of books. That person was Ryan, and it was the start of a business and friendship that shaped both our lives. He knew the business, and I knew the books.
66 indie authors over almost three years have gone out in our boxes. From the start, we were on the same page about wanting to pay authors (because when do authors ever get paid?!) for featuring, since almost everything indie is done out of goodwill and community spirit. I'm immensely proud that we were able to do that.
All of my reading and sampling for the last 3 years has gone into finding great books for our boxes, and through that I've found some of my favourite books, authors, and people.
If I've learned anything, it's that independence is a mindset - nobody is doing this for the money (cos there aint none), its done for the love of the game. We are each others best resource out here.
The one upside is that I no longer have to keep my extensive reading a secret - which means a return of the giga-TBR, and first chapter sampling threads, and public reviews as I work my way through ten trillion indie books looking for great ones. Oh and I dont have to worry about page counts fitting in a box anymore.
I'll end with a well deserved thank you - to Ryan for driving the whole project, to our authors for coming along with us, and to our supporters who believed in us.
Stay weird and curious ❤️
indie community in new capacities in the future, and most importantly want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who supported us along the way! You took a chance on us and we couldn’t be more grateful. 🧵4

This makes our day! It's amazing seeing this all the way across the world in Australia! Mark of Eternity was one of the first stories we featured, and we remember it like it was yesterday 🥳
Just got an awesome anthology from @yourpaperquest featuring authors they've worked with in the past.
And look who's up first 😃
These guys do amazing things for indie authors and are in it purely for the love of the game.
Thanks for featuring Mark of Eternity way back when!

In movies, I'm seeing smaller budget indie stuff do better than big hollywood stuff. In gaming, I see indie games outsell AAA releases.
As the slop onslaught intensifies, I truly believe indie is where its at, so indie authors keep doing your thing, the future is ours.

I'm still behind by a few books, but I finally got around to my next read!
I received "Ventures in Vermillion" by J. T. Thompson in a box from @yourpaperquest and only just now got around to reading it. Guys, this one was SO fun! This is a retelling of several classic Sherlock Holmes tales... but in a fantasy, D&D-style setting. 😍
Y'all may not know this, but I LOVE all things Sherlock Holmes. My purse is Sherlock Holmes-themed, I own a ridiculous number of Sherlock Holmes adaptations, and I even have a deerstalker cap that I ordered from Britain and wear on the few days a year where it actually gets cold in Texas.
This is probably the most faithful reimagining of these Holmes stories I've had the joy of reading. The characters were fun, the setting charming, and the stories were clever yet true to the originals. In this version, Holmes is portrayed more sympathetically (think more Adrian Monk from the show "Monk"), and Watson is a female, but both of these changes play very well with the original stories and add some lovely changes to these familiar tales.
From a parental perspective, this is fairly clean. There are references to murder, death, abuse, etc., but they are not described in greart detail. In the language department, there are three instances of mild-moderate cursing (think PG rating). Basically, other than the language, this book has similar content to the originals Sherlock Holmes books.
Overall, I highly recommend this one! Do y'all have any favorite adaptations of Sherlock Holmes? Let me know in the comments! 🔎
