A fun realization I had recently: with Blackwell (B200 and B300), we are basically back to solving classic NUMA problems inside a single GPU package.
To software, a B200 looks like one big unified GPU. But physically it is two silicon dies connected by NV-HBI. And while that cross-die link is fast, local HBM is still noticeably closer. If you ignore this, memory-heavy workloads like MoE layers spend half their time pulling weights across the link, which burns latency and power for no good reason.
Pay attention to MegaMoE in DeepGEMM. In fact, CUDA doesn’t have an API to tell you which SM sits on which die, so just measure it directly with a few lines of pointer chasing.
1. Slice the weights in half onto physical memory for each die, and run a persistent scheduler where SMs pull from their local die first.
2. Only steal work across dies if there are at least two full waves of tasks left. Why?
Otherwise, paying the transit latency for small leftovers just isn't worth it. Then, 4D TMA descriptor can do coordinate routing so the inner loop stays completely clean.
The payoff is ~100 W of package power saved and 5-10% higher sustained clocks. (Which can be hundreds of thousands of $$ saved in real deployment).

BOSS直聘刚发了个 Nanbeige4.3-33B

These frontier lab custom chips are also unusable without the internal RLed models that write all the ISA kernels.
If they ever sold the chips externally, they would need to also sell API access to a special model that can program it.
Frontier labs making custom chips is not really as hard / as impressive as you might think.
1. They are primarily targeting inference not training. inference is easier
2. They are targeting transformers only. Think large MXU matmul units
3. They are writing all kernels in close to ISA with coding agents RLed for their ISA.
4. They aren’t making high level compilers for codegen
A frontier lab vending a true generic chip like a Nvidia GPU or Google TPU is MUCH harder than spinning up an in house inference program.
Still I think you will see many more inference chip companies as the cost of the software is just the cost of tokens.

Heard from a neolab friend:
“Even if we fail to train the best model, we locked in GPU capacity early. H100/B200/B300 rental prices have since gone up 2–3x. We can just resell the compute and print money.”
OK, so that’s the business model.

Replying to @c1ndl8st

for FPGA CPU cores, simple is beautiful. In my experience,
simpler is smaller
smaller is cheaper
smaller is faster
smaller is more power frugal
simpler is easier to test
