If Vance fails, Trump would still prefer him in 2028 over Rubio and Rubio over DeSantis. But he might prefer Ossoff and Newsom over Vance, and AOC over Ossoff and Newsom. No one is to take over the Republican party after Trump, and the most polarising Democratic victory is the preferred outcome.
