here is what actually happens when you register a .fomo name.
first, you search. we only allow letters, numbers and hyphens, between 3 and 63 characters, so nobody can register a fake "alice" with look-alike characters from another alphabet. availability is read live from the registry contract.
second, you pay. your wallet calls register() on the contract with exactly 0.005 eth. before your wallet even opens, the site simulates the call, so a name that was just taken fails there and not after you paid.
third, it's yours. the same transaction mints the name to your wallet as an nft. if two people register the same name in the same block, exactly one of them gets it and the other transaction reverts.
no server decides who owns what. the whole thing takes about a minute at dotfomo.net
