Documented cases include the 2022 killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, initially blamed by Israeli officials on Palestinian fire; the IDF later stated a high probability of accidental IDF gunfire, matching multiple independent probes. In August 2022 an airstrike killing five children in Jabalia was first attributed to a Palestinian rocket misfire before the IDF admitted its jets carried it out. In 2019 the IDF initially blamed Palestinians for West Bank field fires later shown by video to involve settlers. Initial reports in fluid combat can be incomplete on all sides.
