Sent to a re-education camp in Xinjiang at 14, sentenced to 12 years at 18, dead in prison at 23 On November 6, Radio Free Asia reported that Uyghur girl Rahile Omer had died in a Xinjiang prison at just 23 years old. In 2017, after her father was detained, 14-year-old Rahile was also sent to a re-education camp. Local judicial officials told Radio Free Asia that while in the camp, she was transferred to a detention center because she was deemed “unresponsive to re-education,” refused to name others involved in the case, and prayed in her dormitory. In 2021, at the age of 18, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Radio Free Asia recently called local police and judicial authorities, and several staff members confirmed her death. One police officer said she died of heart disease but did not specify her condition or the circumstances of her death.
