My sister, any time there is wickedness involved (whether it’s the flogging by masquerades, making widows drink water from washed dead bodies or chopping heads to bury a monarch), Nigerian traditions must answer present.
And you must find Nigerians fighting to continue doing it.
I have never heard anyone say, “it’s our tradition to have good roads, schools and hospitals for our future generations!” Or “It is our tradition to hold leaders accountable!”
Or “it is against our tradition to steal public funds!
You will never hear anyone say, “it is against our tradition to have children and not care for them,” or that their deity will haunt anyone who abused their spouse.
Never!
They only remember to weird their man-made tradition when it’s time to kill, steal, intimidate, rape and oppress others.
Protect this man at all cost.

Every time Trump does something else that’s horrifically lewd, racist or just plain corrupt, I think of all those Nigerian Christians who insisted he was the second coming of Christ.

We just laugh, get the gag and move on.
It’s one thing to say you were not amused (a legitimate criticism).
And a complete other thing to interrogate the very point of comedic sketches.
I think we’re so starved for representation and recognition on foreign platforms/stages that we rush to celebrate everything even when we’re the joke. I might be hyper sensitive but I personally I’m never thrilled at caricature portrayals of Nigerian culture or Nollywood. I get why people find it funny and if we were in a global media landscape that was flush with portrayals of Nigerians or our culture with excellence, I might find it enjoyable.
