Mental and physical discipline in the classroom.
Family support.
Competent teachers.
Direct instruction.
High academic standards.
None of it is flashy, hip, trendy. You can’t easily monetize these things.
But this is the boring, real work that produces academic results.

But what are students getting for all that spending? How are they performing? Unfortunately, not well... Just 26% of students are proficient in ELA, 7% in math, and 67% are chronically absent. They also "pass" 92% of their students, so basically everyone passes...

NYC spends $107,033 per student at a single middle school. Why?
Let's examine how school spending has gotten out of control at MS371 and why small schools in the city need to merge or close to provide better resources to everyone, including those attending these schools. 🧵

proposals are being promoted as ways to make city government faster, more efficient, and eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy, it shouldn’t

If NYC schools were “truly integrated” by race and class, three-quarters of students would be low-income and roughly three-fifths Black or Hispanic. And then all children would be proficient in reading and math, right?
As Weber argues, “Samuels, Mamdani, and the press are all focused on the wrong thing. They could do much more for New York City’s minority students by prioritizing academic rigor.”
And I agree. What’s the point of school integration if improving academic outcomes isn’t the goal?

Fascinating take from former First Deputy Chancellor @DanWeisbergNYC. Some parent leaders say he was the one really in charge.
Weisberg criticizes a system with no accountability, despite consuming 25% of our state budget. The Board of Regents’ most recent vote to eliminate the Regents exams without a clear replacement shows just how broken the system is.
What he proposes makes sense, but I have little hope that NYS legislators care enough to take this on without the teachers union’s blessing. And we all know how the union feels about accountability.
Daniel Weisberg argues New York's governor should pick the Board of Regents, which would then pick the education commissioner. A change in state law would do it, he says. No constitutional amendment needed. vitalcitynyc.org/make-the-go…

Her book helped fuel a movement to put beginners and advanced kids in the same classroom.

Many schools are ending gifted and talented classes in the name of “equity.” But holding smart kids back hurts everyone.
