Emergency treatment of a snared lion.
It was tourists who first spotted him: a male who should have been in his prime, hobbled by a snare embedded tightly around his left forelimb.
Born Free and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) alerted our nearby Veterinary Unit, which works in the Meru landscape. Our team darted him with anaesthetic and removed the snare right there in the bush. The vet’s prognosis? A good chance of recovery, with continued monitoring to see how he heals.
Not every lion we reach can be saved, but we go to each one. Working with KWS, our Vet Teams have attended 252 injured lions to date, from spear wounds to human-wildlife conflict injuries. Your donations make this possible.

We’d like you to meet someone very special! (Though nanny Nyambeni rather overshadowed the introductions…!)
Crowned with a little halo of hay, Poppi is the latest addition to our foster programme. Rescued last month, she is carrying on the legacy of her mother, Poppy – a famous matriarch who reigned over Amboseli for more than five decades.
We’ll be sharing little Poppi’s full story over the coming days, but first things first: we wanted to give you a peek at the newest member of our Nursery herd.
You can also head over to our website to learn more about Poppi and become one of her very first adopters: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

🎉 NUTMEG’S FREEDOM RIDE 🎉
Nutmeg was one of the most overlooked dogs at the shelter, and she became one of the longest residents.
Her family had tearfully surrendered her.
Week after week, month after month, she waited for someone to see her. Someone to choose her....
Then... this amazing thing happened ❣️
Sometimes, it does take a village !

It melts our hearts to see Manu, a blind elephant, finding his own way now, all by himself.
When Manu came into our care last year, he was severely weak, with painful joint issues and wounds after decades in the begging trade. We knew that helping him would take time, patience and, most importantly, trust. We had to let him move at his own pace, give him the space to explore, and make sure he always had the care and support he needed.
Today, watching Manu make his way to the pool is a joy in itself. He takes his time, carefully feeling his surroundings with his trunk and checking each step as he moves forward. He has learnt to navigate his world in his own way, one step at a time.
His caregivers are always close by, ready to guide him if he loses his way or needs a little help. But seeing him find his own way to a place he loves, with growing confidence, makes all those little steps feel so special.
We couldn't be happier for you, Manu.

Love you Larry 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵
And of course I couldn't leave Downing Street without some shots of its longest, most famous resident, the Larrmaster himself, @Number10cat. Cute as a button, a bit wobbly, but doing well considering he just had an op. Fur will soon be growing over that scar. Love'ya, Larry!
