"In the broader historical perspectives that agrarian history opens out on to, the peasantry thus seems today like a vanishing ‘theoretical object’. What this brief essay tries to do is offer a range of readings that brings the more classic, historical peasantry back into focus."

Happening in 2 hours, a regional discussion about the reality of Food in the MENA region.
Hunger in the Middle East and North Africa is not a supply problem. It is a question of power.
On World Food Day, the Arab Reform Initiative publishes Cultivating Sovereignty: Struggles for Food Justice in the Middle East and North Africa, a new dossier edited by Julia Choucair Vizoso and produced by ARI’s Environmental Politics Programme.
MENA is the world’s most food-import-dependent region, and hunger in Arab countries was 76% higher in 2022 than in 2000. Food security asks whether there is enough food; food sovereignty asks who decides, who owns and who benefits.
Drawing on ten studies and fieldwork with farmers, unions, cooperatives and civil society in Tunisia, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Syria, the dossier examines who controls land, water, seeds and imports, and who bears the cost of agricultural policy. It closes with concrete recommendations for governments, donors and civil society, from redirecting subsidies to smallholders to protecting farmers’ right to save and exchange seeds.

Seven years into the crisis, Lebanon’s retirees are selling property, considering returning to work, or turning to their children. Their savings remain illegally trapped and their retirement plans shattered, while the state, banks and BDL wrangle over prerogatives, sectarian considerations and who should bear the financial sector’s losses.
Many saved for decades because they could not count on a regular pension. That safety net is now beyond their reach, as inflation, soaring bills and medical insurance costs eat into what little they have. The pension system adopted in 2023 has yet to take effect and will exclude those who have already reached retirement age.
“The situation has become catastrophic,” one retiree tells me. Another no longer has hope of recovering his savings in his lifetime: “The money will probably go to my children … even to my children’s children.”

Karl Kautsky once wrote about the sheer difficulty of writing history from the perspective of historical materialism. It's not just history-from-below or 'social justice' positioning, but a reach to structured totality. It's fair to say, I think, that Chris Wickham pulled it off.

RIP to the Marxist historian Chris Wickham. I was quite blown away by his book, Medieval Europe, which illustrates in extraordinary detail and grand scope the direct coercion that knitted feudal society, quite unlike the structural coercion we are all more familiar with today.
