James “Broadaxe” Broad!
Another member of the lost generation 80s heavyweights who never reached their potential due to some combination of cocaine, alcohol, and donuts.

🙏 Rest in peace Puerto Rican great Wilfredo Gomez. 44-3-1 (42 KOs). P4P, one of the hardest punchers ever. Three-weight world champion. Averaged four fights a year at world level from 1977 through 1980. Something very special! 🇵🇷🥊🇵🇷

Boxing in the 1980s was bigger than the Four Kings.
Larry Holmes carried the heavyweight title into the decade. Mike Tyson took it over before the decade ended. Julio César Chávez went 68-0. Salvador Sánchez was gone at 23. Aaron Pryor and Alexis Argüello fought twice. Donald Curry looked like boxing’s next great fighter until Lloyd Honeyghan changed everything.
Then there were the fights: Chacon–Limón IV, Hagler–Mugabi, Holyfield–Qawi I, Sánchez–Gómez, Curry–Honeyghan.
The decade is remembered through its biggest names, but its depth might be the better story.
Pick any division from the 1980s and you can lose an evening going down the rabbit hole.

Just found out Fletcher passed away the last month. Ridiculous, rollercoaster career that matched and channeled the turbulence of his life. Condolences to his loved ones for the man who brought his absolute all to his bouts.

Just got home from visiting the champ, Iran Barkley. He is feeling better and getting closer to coming home. Not out of the woods just yet but in a better spot. We had a few laughs and just kicked it up like old times. Let’s keep the prayers and good vibes up!

Listening to Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy call Duran-Moore. No talk about Moore's struggles as a kid or Duran's fight-week callouts. They're calling the fight and calling it expertly. This "storyteller" idea in modern boxing broadcasts has degraded the TV product and made it worse.

Can you all imagine what Tommy Hearns or Ray Leonard woulda done to the two mfers last night?? Actually scary to think of. As the self anointed kings of today like to remind us, there are "levels to this shit". They aren't at THAT level of #boxing ... nowhere close. Ain't even a discussion.
