A coronal hole is directly facing Earth today! We may see fast wind from this open patch of magnetic fields sweep past Earth and trigger minor geomagnetic storming around 10/20 or 10/21. High-latitudes may be in for quite a show of active and exciting auroral displays. Mid-latitudes, too just a bit more sporadic of chances with displays lower on the poleward horizon. Let’s wait and see!

Two more solar storms plus some fast solar wind will impact Earth over the next couple of days, continuing this week's storming and extending aurora chances through October 14. I will do a storm impact wrap up and discuss what's next in my full forecast, out later this week.

This new eruption means at least two more solar storm chances to see aurora over the course of the coming week. We still have fast solar wind coming over the next couple of days as well, so the mid-latitude aurora shows may not be over just yet!
Large filament eruption north of the large southern coronal hole. Possibly earth-directed. We'll have to wait for coronagraph imagery…

Time to keep your eyes peeled those in Canada Alaska and down under, could well be precursor to CME arrivals... Good luck 👍

Moments ago: AR 4549 fired off an M6.7 flare and apparent Earth-directed CME. You can see the blast wave in the middle is wide and violent, rippling through the Sun's outer atmosphere. We will need to see coronagraph images + models to get the full story, though. Stay tuned!

Confirmed! Magenta aurora visible in the skies over Northern California, USA, during this ongoing solar storm! We are now at a G3+ storm level. Expect shows to continue easily over the next few hours and possibly more. New Zealand, Tasmania, and Australia chasers get ready!

Wow, just wow. AR 4478 is impressive. The size is respectable, notable even--1140 MSH is one of the largest groups we have seen in the past couple years. This is a BIG BOY! While there are some small deltas in this region, there is only 45% of M-flares and 10% of X-flares with this cluster. AR 4478 is moving closer to the Earth-strike zone. It has the potential to produce a large flare+CME in the near future. Fingers crossed!!

Firing on all cylinders, we have seen a flurry of CME activity from the Sun in the past few days with at least three CMEs directed towards Earth now. HUXt has a few more in the mix, but all possible impacts overlap at roughly the same time--early UT June 5. This is interesting..

Whoa!! The SWPC WSA-ENLIL model prediction for the first two CMEs is *impressive *! Direct double impact, with solar wind speed in 800-1000+ km/s range. If this pans out and Bt/Bz is very favourable we are easy in G3+ range. Even if solar wind speed is somewhat lower (CMEs arrive later), it could still be quite intense if Bt/Bz cooperate. OTOH it could gonthe same way as 19 January 2026 CME. High hopes, low expectations. Who's charging their camera batteries? :)
Incoming! The X1.0 flare produced a CME, evident in EUV dimming data - a faint, but distinct (and quite fast) coronal wave is visible. Based on the propagation of the coronal wave this will likely be a halo CME. Awaiting coronagraph images!

Two far side X-class flares! The STIX instrument on Solar Orbiter detected two X-class flares yesterday: an estimated X1 at 7:08 UTC and an estimated X2 at 21:03 UTC. The X1 was produced by the big new active region, there is no data for the X2 yet (but it is quite likely from the same huge active region). There were also numerous far side M-class flares yesterday.
Heads up, an enormous active region has developed on the far side of the Sun! Impressive size and magnetic configuration - look at that magnetic inversion line in the intermediate part of the region. Looks like one of the biggest active regiona of the cycle so far. Keep an eye on it! Thanks to @kryptohb for the note!
