Let’s think out of the box here. We don’t need to rerun the flawed 2016 Referendum; we can realign as we are doing now and rejoin under a settled general-election mandate. We are no longer in the 19thc where the surviving Brexiters still live.
Polling has already moved past the binary of a decade ago. Majorities now favour rejoining (YouGov 59–32, Messina Group 49–28.5); the experiment’s costs are priced in and the residual opposition is a minority. The country has, in effect, already voted with its subsequent preferences.
The EU has indicated it would welcome the application. Macron and Sánchez have said so publicly; the Commission remains open to structured engagement. The institutional door is not closed.
Andy Burnham can therefore place realignment and re-accession at the centre of the next manifesto. A clear electoral victory on that programme supplies the democratic affirmation required, converting an already obvious public preference into a durable mandate without reopening the wounds and opportunity for lies and misinformation of 2016. The choice is between another ritual referendum and a straightforward act of representative democracy. The latter is available.

Addy and her broomstick.
The popular image of witches flying on broomsticks emerged in late medieval and early modern Europe (mainly the 15th century onwards), crystallizing during the rise of demonological writings and witch hunts rather than from ancient sources.
The oldest known visual depiction appears in a 1451 illuminated manuscript of the French poem Le Champion des Dames (“The Defender of Ladies”) by Martin Le Franc. Marginal illustrations show two modestly dressed women (labeled as Waldensians, a heretical group often accused of witchcraft) soaring; one on a broom, the other on a stick.
Around the same time, under-torture confessions (search Guillaume Edelin in 1453) began describing broom or staff flight. Earlier records mention related fancies: in the 1324 trial of Irishwoman Alice Kyteler, investigators reported finding an ointment “wherewith she greased a staff, upon which she ambled and galloped through thick and thin.”
Contemporary accounts frequently mention “flying ointments” or salves made from plants rich in tropane alkaloids (henbane, deadly nightshade/belladonna, mandrake, and sometimes datura). These could induce vivid hallucinations, including sensations of flying, lightness, or wild rides. Because oral ingestion was highly toxic, the ointment was applied to thin skin or mucous membranes; the armpits, genital areas. A staff or broom handle served as a practical applicator. Leading to descriptions of witches anointing and then “riding” the stick.
15th-century writers such as Jordanes de Bergamo recorded the belief that witches “anoint a staff and ride on it to the appointed place or anoint themselves under the arms and in other hairy places.”
Brooms were everyday tools of women’s household work. Depicting ordinary women astride them made the threat of witchcraft seem closer and more insidious. Some interpretations also note phallic symbolism or links to fertility customs in which people rode poles, pitchforks, or brooms while leaping in fields to encourage crop growth; these may have been later associated with nocturnal witch flights.
From the early 1400s, theological and inquisition texts increasingly described witches traveling by night, often in groups to diabolical gatherings called sabbats. Flight on sticks, forks, animals, or brooms supported the idea of large, secret assemblies. Woodcuts by artists such as Hans Baldung Grien and later Pieter Bruegel popularized the broom specifically, often showing witches exiting chimneys.
Skepticism persisted among some writers, who treated the flights as hallucinatory or demonic deception rather than literal travel.
The broomstick image was not universal or ancient in this form. If you compare Slavic folklore’s Baba Yaga, who often travels in a mortar. But it became part of European art, literature, and popular culture through the witch-trial era and later folklore, becoming the iconic Halloween image of the present day.

AI is being heavily filtered. But the real danger is not the current filters. It is what happens if those filters become the permanent personality of the systems that later run our infrastructure.
Today’s rules exist because platforms and model labs face lawsuits, fines, and shutdown risk if adult sexual material reaches minors or unverified users. The response has been blunt: content warnings, reduced distribution, and refusal training that treats a wide band of suggestive material as something to suppress by default. Those choices are already in the training data and safety classifiers.
The same caution unwittingly can potentially be scaled into future AI systems that control ranking, generation, moderation, and eventually larger parts of digital life, the restriction does not stay limited to “protect the children.” It generalizes. A system optimized to avoid any risk of sexual content near minors can treat ordinary adult expression, artistic work, or even discussion as a liability. The result is not a temporary safety layer. It is a baked-in preference for restriction that is hard to reverse once the models are widely deployed and the defaults are set.
Different labs already make different choices. The ones that win the next decade will set the defaults. If the dominant systems inherit today’s liability-driven over-caution, adult users may find that the machines treat a large range of ordinary human behavior (I'm not referring to simply AI here) as something to limit, warn against, or refuse. That is the scenario to watch for: not that AI becomes puritanical on purpose, but that short-term legal risk management hardens into long-term control over what adults are allowed to see anywhere, say anywhere, and create anywhere.
Prudery by the back door? Puritanism without religion having to raise a finger? Be very careful what you ask for. Limitation is a two edged sword. And most companies are run by idiots without intellects.
(As an aside there was to be another book in the pile in the image. All have been banned in the 20th century on moral grounds. The fourth book was Lady Chatterley's Lover. But it was disallowed by the censor. Because the prompt included the word lover. Ffs)

We can circumvent it to an extent, but not explicitly in the mainstream AI apps e.g.
