Nokuthula Mabaso was one of three @abahlalibM leaders from the eKhenana commune killed in the space of just six months in 2022. Four years later, there has been no justice for her and many other human rights defenders who have been silenced. ✊ Join the call for legislation that protects human rights defenders: campaigns.amnesty.org.za/pag…

The military continues to detain the wife of Najja Nasif, the personal assistant to @HEBobiwine, holding her beyond 48-hour limit. Recently, women have increasingly become targets of abduction in situations where their husbands are the primary targets. This trend is worrying

It went well. We won we won 💃🏻 💃🏻 the constitutional court agreed with us that the computer misuse amendment act is unconstitutional and therefore null and void.
Coming up today at the constitutional court.

I stand with fellow regional leaders to decry violations that include brutal assaults, the humiliation of women political actors, and the use of sexual violence as a tool of political intimidation. What is happening in Uganda is not an internal matter; it is a regional and continental emergency that demands urgent action. For every suppressed voice, more emerge. These acts are atrocious and reprehensible, but they will not prevail.

Hearing disturbing news from #Bangladesh on the reported arbitrary dismissal of WHRD & university professor Layeqa Bashir, which appears to be linked to her human rights work & role in advancing accountability. Her right to due process must be guaranteed. @BDPM_Geneva

Very disturbing that a number of human rights organisations, including the National Coalition for Human Rights Defenders @NCHRD_UG, Chapter Four Uganda @chapterfourug, Alliance for Election Finance Monitoring @AcfimAfrica, Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda @HRNJUganda & the National NGO Forum @ngoforum have all been ordered by the NGO Bureau @NGObureau to suspend their activities. This is an extremely worrying development ahead of Thursday’s elections; the suspension must be lifted immediately. @geneva_uganda @UgandaMFA

A woman in the crowd lifts the Constitution and presses the Zanu-PF candidate on the 2030 agenda, arguing it clashes with the Constitution, and with what Nkulumane actually needs.

𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄! Today, as #Tanzania marks its Independence Day and the world commemorates International Human Rights Defenders Day, we stand alongside women human rights defenders and communities who are mourning their dead, searching for the disappeared, and refusing to be silenced. The African Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders (@whrdinitiative), together with WHRDs, social movements, and civil society across Africa, has issued this statement: “Repression Is Not Independence: Women Defenders Speak Out on Tanzania.” We name the violence. We name the gendered targeting of women defenders. We name the legal architecture that shields power from accountability. And we set out clear WHRD-centred demands for safety, justice, dignity, and structural change. 📄 Read & share the full statement (attached). Because independence cannot be celebrated while streets run with blood and women defenders are punished for imagining a different future. #WomenHumanRightsDefenders #WHRDs #CivicSpace #HumanRights #16DaysOfActivism #WeAreWHRDs #SafeguardWHRDs @UN_HRC @MaryLawlorhrds @Ginitastar @achpr_cadhp @africanngos @CIVICUSMonitor @omctorg @FrontLineHRD @WHRDSomalia @AfricanWHRD @WHRDhub @X @TheChanzo @CPJAfrica @MariaSTsehai @AgoraCFR @ACTSA_UK @ohchr_sa @OHCHR_EARO @SADC_News @
