US credit market is CRACKING beneath the surface:
Option-adjusted spreads on US high-yield bonds rated CCC or lower have surged to 13.45%, their highest level since the 2020 CRASH.
In other words, investors demand significantly more compensation for credit risk.
This comes as lower-rated companies face rising pressure from overleveraged balance sheets, higher interest rates, and business models disrupted by AI and changing consumer behavior.
In effect, companies struggling to repay their debt are increasingly negotiating with bondholders to change repayment terms, raising the risk that investors will recover less money than expected.
Stress is increasingly uneven across sectors, with CCC-rated telecom, cable, transport and media bonds facing further spread widening.
At the same time, retail, utilities, energy and food bonds saw spreads tighten sharply in October.
Credit investors are starting to see what equity investors are missing.

On October 28, an Auburn, Washington, police officer was filmed striking a 33-year-old man in the head and face approximately 20 times after using a Taser. Police say the encounter began because the man was running into traffic and attempting to enter passing vehicles. The man was hospitalized, and the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Unacceptable. Every human being deserves dignity. Allegations against someone do not excuse excessive force.

A Black military family in El Paso pulled both of their daughters out of high school after racist harassment turned physical in the cafeteria—and a school officer claimed the student who threw her daughter to the floor was "only restraining her."
El Paso, Texas
Mother Precious Starks says her daughter Brooke was the only Black student in one of her classes at Pebble Hills High School, where students threw objects at her face and made racial comments.
Days after Brooke reported it, students confronted her and her sister Taniya in the cafeteria: "What did you say to my brother?"
Administrators only gave the other students in-school suspension, forcing the family to homeschool both girls.
Should a military family have to pull their kids out of school because administrators won't protect them?
