My latest story in @Diplomat_APAC about the new deportation law threatening young Burmese refugees in Thailand who have fled forced conscription and becoming part of the military junta's 'one-way troops'
A recently-passed law in Thailand increases the risk that people fleeing repression will be deported and forcibly recruited into the military’s units of “one-way troops.” buff.ly/wuOzeUU

"The growing number of Rohingya seeking safety in Malaysia is the direct consequence of the world’s negligence and inaction."
In @Diplomat_APAC, Lynn Htet from @FortifyRights argues that #Malaysia can no longer treat the #Rohingya crisis as Myanmar's internal affair. As mass atrocities and forced displacement have regional consequences.
Malaysia should move beyond the principle of non-interference to confront the #Myanmar junta, continue protecting Rohingya refugees fleeing atrocities in Myanmar and dire conditions in refugee camps in Bangladesh, and adopt a zero-tolerance approach to hate speech by holding officials accountable for inciting hatred, discrimination, and hostility against refugees.

.@FortifyRights’s @yaplaysheng speaks to @AlexHowlett2 @Diplomat_APAC about the rise in anti-#Rohingya hate in #Malaysia.
“When influential figures repeat harmful things against refugees, they lend legitimacy to online hate and give the public permission to translate that online hate into offline abuses. And we’ve seen that already with the vigilantes going around, exposing the locations of people’s homes and schools, and sometimes brutalizing them.”

My new story on how social media is fuelling the dehumanisation of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia for @Diplomat_APAC. Interviewees shared that some rhetoric bears a disturbing resemblance to narratives which justified their mass expulsion from Myanmar in 2017
“For the first time in a long time, Malaysia felt like a place where I could breathe... Since May, that feeling has disappeared. It’s heartbreaking to feel that fear return, after finally believing I had found some peace.” buff.ly/LuQbQbF
