Managing diseases in livestock in a country the size of the U.S. is a huge challenge due to the frequent and extensive movement of animals across the nation. Learn more in a piece I wrote for @statnews with my colleague, Colleen Webb (CSU):

Pasteurization appears to inactivate #H5N1 so milk continues to be safe, but you might be surprised to learn how prevalent raw milk consumption is in the US.
Raw milk sales are permitted in most states (thanks to @AlexesMerritt for the map, data from procon.org)
I just know this is going to end up as a question on an Epi 101 exam this semester
“At least 15 people who participated in the Tough Mudder Race, held Saturday and Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, reported having rashes & pustules, some paired with fevers and fatigue...” h/t @RioSlade pressdemocrat.com/article/ne…
A step in the right direction but not enough.

The American Red Cross has begun accepting blood donations from gay and bisexual men in monogamous relationships.
Decades of discriminatory rules by the FDA barred them from donating based on outdated stereotypes even as the nation deals with a massive shortage of donated blood.
I have long called for this discriminatory and medically unnecessary ban to end and am encouraged by this step both in our fight for LGBTQ+ equality, and also to boost the nation’s blood supply. cnbc.com/2023/08/07/red-cros…

If it wasn’t “classless” when Caitlin Clark did it, don’t call it classless when Angel Reese does it. Let the women compete, it’s sports!!

Georgetown is the No. 1 school for Presidential Management Fellows in the US. Add that to our No. 1 ranking in Fulbright scholars & our No. 1 ranking in Pickering, Rangel & Payne Fellows. What better demonstration of our school’s commitment to global service!
A total of 54 Georgetown students were chosen as finalists for the U.S. government’s Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program, a highly competitive development program that prepares the next generation of leaders for public service. bit.ly/3ZMHkpL
a glimmer of hope ✨✨
Breaking: Men in monogamous same-sex relationships would be allowed to donate blood without abstaining from sex under new FDA rules, people familiar with the plans say on.wsj.com/3VVYgIH

I'm one of maybe 5 people on this flight wearing a mask.
I bet more people would be wearing masks if they know how crappy the air is on this plane right now.
The one day warning, and not supplying masks for weeks in certain locations is very Cura Personalis of you @Georgetown

Very excited to be part of @bansallab at @GUbiology as a postdoc fellow in infectious disease modeling. Using mobility and contact data, I will study how human behaviour, and spatial heterogeneities in US, shape disease transmission. Thanks folks for the warm welcome!
