Monero $XMR mining through Qubic began as a temporary initiative, a strategic test and proof-of-concept for Qubic’s Useful Proof of Work (uPoW) model. So far, it has exceeded expectations. For CPU miners, $QUBIC has become the most profitable coin to mine. At the same time, Qubic’s partial allocation of compute power toward Monero hashrate quickly captured over 13% of the total Monero network. Due to this success, the Qubic team is now modifying its algorithm to direct even more hashrate toward Monero. But here lies the issue: with the current acceleration, Qubic is on track to surpass 50% of Monero’s total hashpower, effectively gaining the ability to influence or control protocol-level decisions. It’s important to note that the goal was never to harm Monero, either ethically or legally. The intent was to run an experiment and generate revenue. However, holding a majority of the hashpower opens up some fascinating possibilities. For example, Qubic could technically enforce a rule where only miners routing their work through the Qubic protocol are rewarded, while those mining Monero directly would have to join Qubic to continue earning. With the proposal, which just passed by Qubic Validators (Computors), the above scenario has just been greenlighted. This represents a unique case in crypto: a whitehat-style 51% takeover, made possible not through malicious intent, but through the first real-world application of Useful Proof of Work. It’s a historic moment, the first time a crypto project has an ability to overtake another PoW-based network through raw computational leverage. Like many others, I’m watching with great interest and excitement as this unfolds. We may be witnessing history in the making for the blockchain industry.
