This is what its like raising a toddler in Brooklyn. The grocery store is a 1 minute walk. We go every day, and usually multiple times a day just for fun. They have those kid grocery carts and my daughter loves to push them. The cashiers all know her and interact directly with her, leaning way over the counter so she can hand them items directly. Tonight she asked to stop by the grocery store on the way home and bought herself an orange.
Our closest park is a 9 min walk, and there are two other excellent parks within a 20 minute walk. We go to all three parks regularly.
Her school is a 22 min walk, her doctor is an 8 min walk. We also live walking distance from a number of friends. I tend to stay in my neighborhood most days. Not only do we rarely take a car, I actually only take the subway or bus a few times a week.
Last week, friends with young kids came to visit us from the suburbs in California.
As we ran around Manhattan together, they looked at us and asked, “How do you do this all the time? How do you raise young kids in New York City? Do you have to get in the car every time you go somewhere? This seems crazy.”
I smiled and told them that, for us, raising kids in the city is actually easier than raising them in the suburbs.
We never think about getting in the car.
The grocery store is two blocks away. The kids’ doctor is two blocks away. There’s a Barnes & Noble six minutes away on foot.
We walk to the Met, the Natural History Museum, and Central Park.
We walk to get coffee. There are playgrounds and playdates everywhere. Our building is full of kids their age, and so is our block.
Once you get past the idea that raising kids in the city must be complicated, the day-to-day reality is pretty simple.
We just walk out the door.
And honestly, raising kids in the city is actually a whole lot easier than raising them in the suburbs.

Personal project: I will plan a generational ship as a side hobby and share the plans here.

You know that scene in every alien invasion movie where the aliens learn English by binge watching every TV channel at once?
We have that technology now.
We'll be able to talk to aliens when we meet them.
