‘Fastest growing economy in the G7’. How ‘fast’ is that? Answer: 0.7% in the past three months. Hardly gangbusters.
Think how we could grow inside the Single Market: Denmark 3.7%, Poland 3.6%, Sweden 3.3% etc.
On @BBCr4today Jim O'Neill, former Goldman Sachs chief economist, claims that Britain has suffered economically from Brexit but then tells us that we have the fastest growing economy in the G7.
Typical inconsistent nonsense from an 'economist'.
Revealing that his colleagues say Burnham is ‘courageous’.
Do you have to be brave in Britain today to discuss the blindingly obvious? If so, Burnham is indeed brave.
For years Westminster treated Brexit as untouchable.
That is changing.
The Guardian reports that @AndyBurnham now wants an honest discussion about freedom of movement as part of Britain’s future relationship with Europe.
@AngelaRayner says it should not be off the table.
🎉 Government is preparing to set out its long-term options around the 20 November UK-EU summit.
It’s time to get our freedom of movement back! It was stolen from us as it was never actually on 2016 ballot paper.
Nor was leaving the Single Market.
Nor was leaving the customs union.
Nor was the final form of Brexit that Britain ended up with.
Those choices were made afterwards by the Tories with Farage’s help.
If Britain is now considering whether the Brexit red lines still serve our economy, food security, energy security and national resilience, then the democratic answer is simple:
🙋♀️Ask the public what they want now.
UCL vice-chancellor forced to repay wife’s £5,000 travel expenses
Er hem. Btw he earns £530k pa. Hardly short of the odd couple of bob. Meanwhile, UCL students pay through the nose. Not very edifying.

Is Trump’s iron hold over America disappearing? Are decent Americans fed up with his pro-Putin policies? With Witkoff & Kushner’s useless ‘diplomacy’? Hegseth’s public executions? Vance’s ‘culture wars’? We most earnestly hope so.
The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before the restrictions. The speeds are now where they need to be. The restoration began overnight, and by this morning, speeds were already sufficient. This matters: for our frontline logistics, for defending Ukraine against jet-powered “shaheds.”
I thank all Americans and all our partners who took this seriously and truly helped – members of Congress, senators, all the media, the State Department, and the President. Protecting lives matters.

For reasons we’ve never understood, Farage & REF are never called to account about this. The ‘Boriswave’ is also a Nigelwave. And piffle. He said ‘27,000 migrants a year’, it was 1.5m.
Exactly so. The Boris-Frost ‘points-based’ immigration policy, stolen deliberately from Farage, brought 1.5m migrants & families to the UK from Africa & SE Asia, few of whom will ever return home. By producing the hardest of Brexit deals they made our borders less safe.
= Tactical voting. It’s catching on everywhere.
The usual suspects pop up. Prof Anand Menon new chief of @CER_EU on @TimesRadio quick to accuse Burnham of breaking his pledge to the voters of Makerfield, rather unfairly perhaps (no changes until after the next election, so pledge upheld).
Here we go - again

But if the EU workers do the jobs the UK economy grows & Brits will benefit, even those who don’t want to work.
Enterprising Brits can go and work in the EU if they want.
Tories & REF are making the same case against FoM, there are already too many unemployed young Brits, & EU workers would take ‘their’ jobs. But the case for is strong: Brits aren’t doing the jobs & won’t do them or they’d be doing them. EU workers will.

If @andyburnham is serious about taking Britain back towards the EU, he has to confront the farm tax.
Because rejoining means returning to a Single Market built around free movement of capital, non-discrimination, competition and a level playing field.
For decades the European Commission has explicitly warned member states that inheritance and gift taxes must not endanger the survival of viable family businesses.
It recognised the obvious problem: succession taxes can force heirs to strip cash from a business, sell productive assets or sell the business altogether.
That principle applies with particular force to farming.
British farmland is highly capitalised, farm margins are tight and the business requires huge continuing investment just to produce food.
So if Burnham wants Britain back inside the European economic system, he cannot simply ignore a domestic tax regime that can weaken farm succession and leave British producers carrying a structural disadvantage.
He may choose to restore APR and BPR. He may choose another release valve.
But “rejoin Europe while doing nothing about the competitive burden on British farming” is not a coherent position.
A serious rejoin strategy has to include agriculture, succession and the level playing field.
@anandMenon1
Andy, @andyburnham I am pleading with you to end this nightmare for farming families.
Farmers have now lived under the shadow of the farm IHT changes for nearly two years. Behind all the Treasury calculations and political arguments are real families, real farms and an enormous amount of fear.
A close friend of my son died by suicide just a week before his wedding. He had been deeply worried about what divorce could mean for the future of the family farm.
This year, the brother of one of my closest friends died intestate. His death has left the farm and his family facing terrible uncertainty and complexity at the worst possible moment.
These are not wealthy people sitting on disposable assets. A farm is a home, a business, a livelihood and often the work of several generations bound together.
For nearly two years families have been trying to work out whether they must sell land, restructure businesses, change wills, divide farms or somehow find money that simply does not exist in cash.
The human strain of that uncertainty is immense.
Please, Andy, use the Budget to bring it to an end.
Restore proper APR and BPR for genuine working farms and family businesses and release farming families from this burden.
They need certainty. They need to be able to plan for succession rather than fear it. And, above all, they need to know that passing a viable farm from one generation to the next is not something government intends to punish.
Honestly, Matthew Syed, we can be bothered with this pompous blather. ‘On my travels…I saw indomitable spirit’. So that’s all right then.

Two take-aways
Esp public dislike of ‘over-calculation’ in political discourse. Burnham’s right.
The inside story of Andy Burnham’s first 100 days: ‘I’ve got to be radical’
A terrifically good must-read.
There’s clearly a human being in No 10, not a robot, like Keir & Rishi, not the mad woman of Chaillot, & not the incompetent fool known as Boris.
