I get that rail is important to millions as a service, but it is also how I make a living. I post in a personal capacity, often in the context of it being my job, rather than as a general commentary of the service. I do like to have a little fun with it. I hope you understand.
What people want from their Christmas ads, evidently, is nostalgia for a time past. They don’t want a representation of what the modern world has become. I don’t think the childhoods and Christmases of the 1970s, 80s or 90s really exist anymore. Not with internet and screens.
Oh @JohnLewisRetail, you got it so wrong. Two ungrateful, entitled brats only interested in what Granny has bought them, while she's desperately trying to win their approval. Whatever happened to being excited to spend time with family, regardless of the presents? Awful advert
Was there last week. All the rides were functioning and the Gangsta Granny one was actually ok, but the whole land had a bit of an ‘end is nigh’ feel to it. Few people and no shops/kiosks open or anything like that. No surprise I guess.

The railway now is more similar to the railway then than many people commenting would wish to believe. Technology has come on, as has health and safety and the rule book has been adapted to fit over the years, but the procedural foundations run deep.
Settling down for MOTD on a Saturday evening is one of the few experiences that has remained reassuringly similar down the years, although it is nice that my own club now features. It most certainly did not in 1995!
It was my mate’s knackered old (proper) mini not long after he’d passed his test. We thought it’d be fun to visit every supermarket in a ten mile radius one night, which included nearly binning it into a signpost at the foot of Ditchling Beacon. What were we doing? Such losers.
Summer 2002.
Three mates, a red Vauxhall Nova and absolutely nowhere to be.
£500 car, a full tank of petrol and the whole summer ahead of us.
No smartphones. No social media. No constant notifications.
Just driving around, meeting your mates and making memories.
God, I miss those days.
Who else remembers? ❤️
I think I’ve started to use the nearside lane more because of this so clearly there’s a little bit of me that wants to climb on my high horse! I’m only human.
On the way home, we discovered Bekonscot model village, the railway themed, oldest model village in the world, and narrow gauge railway. I think I enjoyed it more than the kids. Particularly tickled by the signalman perched outside his box looking like he’d had a rough turn!
