The behavioral insights approach to design has often been top-down. A priority moving forward should be to incorporate more reflexive, dynamic, and nuanced forms of behavioral change, write @mhallsworth and @Karminker, like those from human centered design.behavioralscientist.org/the-…

So you remember a couple of months ago when we were in the peak and you wanted to do something to help, but there was nothing you could do, so you stood on your doorstep and clapped? Remember that feeling? All you wanted was to be able to help somehow? Well now is your chance. 1/

Design decisions can kill. Even if it’s routine or temporary, consider how it will impact the emotional state of your customers. Designers, DO BETTER. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

One UX research habit to build is this: When you want to ask, "What would you do if..." Instead ask, "What did you do when..." Replace speculation with anecdotes.
Replying to @kimgoodwin
If you want to predict future user behavior, focus on deeply understanding current behavior & motivations instead of asking users to predict what they’ll do with a product they’ve never seen.

A pervasive misconception, spread by many good academics: Behavioral economics is only about "small tweaks" to policy. False! E.g., fuel economy rules, energy efficiency rules & rear visibility in cars have all been behaviorally informed. @BXconference papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

There are 12 dots in this picture but you can’t see them all at once. Nick Chater speaking at #BX2019 uses this famous illusion to illustrate his thesis that ‘the Mind is Flat’.

Lessons from #RCT practitioners: In choosing which ideas to test using RCTs, consider: (1) is the idea well-defined (is there a logic/theory behind it) (2) is there prior evidence or research? (3) is it #scalable? @BXconference @UofT_BEAR #BX2019

David Halpern in his opening remarks: "Ideas that don't work are ok." He estimates only 1 out of 4 interventions succeed, probably less. Important to do expectation management towards your clients #bx2019

This is all about definitions. I convinced @CassSunstein that #sludge should be reserved for bad stuff. So cooling off periods are friction for good. Keep sludge pejorative please.
An interesting first step in the sludge vs nudge debate: --> Good vs bad could also be "facilitate vs impede choice" "illuminate vs shroud" "clarify vs confuse" #behaviourdesign #behaviourchange

People rely on patterns, proximity, and past experience to make decisions. This can have disasterous consequences when ignored in layout and #design - like when you put bright cleaning products next to the juice. #ux #ui

This is interesting but misses an important point: it’s not the design itself that can constitute a #darkpattern, it’s the intent behind it. Thus there’s a lot of gray areas & the burden can’t only be on #ux or #ui designers, but on product owners & execs. fastcompany.com/90332113/sen…
