Iโm beginning a new series here at @BigDogsAtWork:
๐ง๐๐ ๐ค๐จ๐๐๐ง ๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐
Stories of athletes from every sport, every level and every era who lead through example, not the limelight.
Some have overcome extraordinary adversity.
Some have used their platform to carry something bigger than themselves.
Many have done both, often without receiving the attention their stories deserve.
Their stories may not always lead the headlines or fill the highlight reels. But through courage, perseverance, sacrifice and service, they remind us that some of the greatest things in sports will never appear on a scoreboard.
Because a Big Dog at Work is not defined by size, sport, position, statistics or spotlight.
It is defined by the work.
The standard.
What you overcome. What you carry. And who you lift along the way.
This series is for them.
As you begin seeing the series, if an athlete comes to mind from any sport, any level or any era, please share their name and a little of their story in the comments below or send me a DM.
Weโll do the work to learn more and tell their story well.
Support the Big Dog mindset.
Celebrate the work.
Respect the grind.

Yotes,
A green army, flying high, marches south from the northern Dakota Territory. Old rivalries bring us once more to battle.
Two flagships. One territory.
With the townsfolk at our side, we ready the big guns and shall defend every inch of the DakotaDome.

๐ฆ๐ง๐ข๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ | Eric LeGrand | Football
There is a lot of life in the years since Eric LeGrandโs injury. We should talk about that, too.
In October 2010, @EricLeGrand52 sustained a spinal cord injury while making a tackle for @RFootball. He was left paralyzed.
Rehabilitation became part of his daily life. So did learning to rely on others for things he once did without thinking.
Eric has remained determined to walk again.
But he has not made everything else wait.
In 2014, he earned his @RutgersU degree in labor and employment relations. Broadcasting brought him back into football. Speaking, writing and entrepreneurship gave him other work to pursue, including opening a coffee house in his hometown.
Along the way, Eric recognized something about the attention surrounding his injury: many families facing similar circumstances had no public platform at all.
In 2013, he launched Team LeGrand with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, @ReeveFoundation.
The effort has raised more than $2 million for spinal cord injury research and initiatives that improve quality of life for people living with paralysis and their families.
Research takes time. Families still need support while that work continues.
Eric understands both.
He has also spoken openly about sad days, accepting help and developing the confidence to pursue new goals. That honesty gives his encouragement substance. He knows how much effort an ordinary day can require.
What I appreciate about Ericโs example is this:
You can hope for something to change without putting your entire life on hold until it does.
A degree earned. A business opened. A family supported. Those are real accomplishments, not placeholders until recovery reaches a particular milestone.
Eric continues to work toward walking again.
The life he is living now deserves to be seen in full.

If those walls could talk. Imagine the stories.
23 straight home wins from 2003โ2007. Three consecutive unbeaten home seasons along the way.
16 straight home-opening wins from 2003โ2018. Thatโs a lot of visitors taking a quiet bus ride home.
And the tradition keeps going.
8โ0 at home in 2024. A combined 14โ1 in the Dome across 2024 and 2025.
Then thereโs that 29โ28 win over No. 1 North Dakota State in 2024. A share of the programโs first Missouri Valley Football Conference title, earned right here.
Home since 1979. Generations of Yotes. Plenty of stories still to write.

When college coaches and recruiting departments evaluate high school football prospects, the process goes beyond athletic ability, statistics and highlight films
Character, maturity, accountability, coachability and overall program fit all matter
Parents also need to understand how their behavior can influence the recruiting process
Recruiting red flags parents should avoid:
๐น Controlling Communication: Constantly contacting coaches instead of allowing athletes to build relationships
๐น Overbearing Behavior: Dominating recruiting visits or speaking for your child
๐น Criticizing Coaches: Publicly complaining about playing time, coaching decisions or recruiting opportunities
๐น Unrealistic Expectations: Assuming your child deserves Division I offers based on statistics or accolades
๐น Misrepresenting Interest: Exaggerating scholarship offers, measurables or recruiting attention
๐น Pressuring Staff: Demanding offers, immediate responses or recruiting decisions
๐น Negative Social Media Activity: Publicly criticizing programs, coaches or other athletes
๐น Creating Conflict: Confronting high school coaches or making excuses for poor performance
๐น Disrespecting Opportunities: Dismissing FCS, DII, DIII or NAIA programs without considering fit
๐น Prioritizing Exposure: Focusing on rankings and publicity over development and academics
๐น Controlling Decisions: Pressuring athletes toward certain programs or making recruitment about the parent
WHAT COLLEGE COACHES VALUE:
โ
Maturity and independence
โ
Accountability and coachability
โ
Professionalism and honesty
โ
Academic commitment
โ
Realistic expectations
โ
Genuine interest in their program
MY MESSAGE TO PARENTS:
โผ๏ธBe involved, ask questions and advocate for your child, but allow them to take ownership of their recruitment
These behaviors are potential concerns, not automatic disqualifiers
๐จCollege coaches are recruiting your child, not you. Help them develop the independence, communication skills and accountability needed at the next level
Your involvement should open doors, not create obstacles.
๐ Support the athlete. Respect the process. Let your child take ownership of their future

At a national volleyball tryout, someone questioned whether Kendall Kritenbrink belonged among the outside hitters.
At 5โ11โ, she didnโt fit their expectations.
But she wasnโt there to satisfy someoneโs measurements.
She was there to compete.
Kendall Kritenbrink
@SDCoyotesVB | 2011โ2014
Womenโs Volleyball | Outside Hitter
๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ๐๐ญ
โAlthough I have achieved one of my biggest dreams, Iโm not satisfied.โ
Kendall Kritenbrink, after earning a place on the U.S. Collegiate National Team.
Consider her accomplishments at South Dakota.
1,925 career kills
More than 1,000 career digs
2013 Summit League Player of the Year
Two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American
U.S. Collegiate National Team selection
She finished her USD career as the programโs all-time leader in kills, kills per set and attacks.
And there was more to Kendall than her ability to put a ball away.
An elementary education major with a minor in coaching, she also earned Summit League academic recognition.
Her older sister Kristin had worn the Coyote uniform from 2007โ2010.
Two sisters who contributed their own chapters to the programโs history.
๐๐๐ค๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ
โข Measurements describe an athlete. They donโt determine her limits.
โข An outside hitterโs value isnโt limited to attacking. Kendall contributed more than 1,000 digs, too.
โข Representing your country is an achievement. Returning home hungry to improve says something more.
โข Family traditions are worth honoring, but each person deserves to write their own chapter.
โข The next generation benefits when accomplished athletes also choose to teach and coach.

Parent Recruiting Guide ๐จ
โข PWO: Preferred Walk-On: An athlete invited to join a college team without an athletic scholarship. It may come with a roster opportunity, but confirm whether a roster spot is guaranteed and what happens if the athlete doesnโt make the team.
โข WO: Walk-On: An athlete who joins or tries out for a team without an athletic scholarship. A roster spot is not guaranteed.
โข PSA: Prospective Student-Athlete: An athlete a college is recruiting or evaluating before they enroll.
โข OFFER: A coachโs offer may be verbal or written. Ask whether it includes athletic aid, how much aid is offered, and how long it lasts. Get the terms in writing.
โข COMMItTABLE OFFER: An offer the coach says is available for the athlete to accept. Ask the coach directly whether it is committable and whether any conditions apply.
โข NON-RENEWAL: Notice that the school will not renew an athleteโs athletic aid for the next term or year. Read the written agreement and ask about the schoolโs appeal process.
โข GRAYSHIRT: An athlete delays enrolling full-time, often until a later term. The impact on aid and eligibility depends on the situation; ask the schoolโs compliance office.
โข BLUESHIRT: An informal football term for a walk-on who receives a scholarship after enrolling. The timing and roster treatment depend on current rules, so confirm the details with the school.
โข TRANSFER PORTAL: The system college athletes use to notify their school they intend to transfer and allow other schools to recruit them. Entering the portal does not guarantee admission, a roster spot, athletic aid or eligibility at another school.
โข OV: Official Visit: A visit where the college may cover certain travel and visit expenses. In Division I, there is no overall limit on official visits, but prospects are generally limited to one per school. Rules can vary by division and sport.
โข UV: Unofficial Visit: A visit paid for by the athlete or family. The athlete may still meet with coaches and see campus, subject to recruiting rules.
โข VERBAL COMMITMENT: An athleteโs public or private statement that they plan to attend a school. It is not the same as signing a written agreement.
โข FINANCIAL AID AGREEMENT: The written agreement outlining athletic aid. Division I ended the National Letter of Intent program in 2024; NCAA guidance says Division II schools may still use the NLI.
โข NIL: Name, Image and Likeness: An opportunity to earn money or other compensation for things like endorsements, appearances or social media promotions. Families should review the written terms and understand what the athlete must do in return.
โข NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER: The NCAA office that certifies academic and athletics eligibility for Division I and II. The NCAA core-course GPA may differ from the GPA on a high-school transcript.
โข RECRUITING CALENDAR: Sport- and division-specific dates that determine when coaches may contact, evaluate or meet with prospects. A โdead periodโ generally restricts in-person recruiting activity and campus visits.

๐ฆ๐ง๐ข๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ญ | Renee Powell | Golf
Renee Powell grew up on a golf course built because her father was not welcome on other ones.
After serving in World War II, Bill Powell returned to Ohio and encountered racial discrimination in the game he loved.
So he built Clearview Golf Club.
A place where everyone could play.
His daughter learned to swing a club at three. In 1967, she became the second Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour, following Althea Gibson.
Being good enough to compete did not mean being treated as though she belonged.
Powell faced threats against her life and was denied accommodation at tournament hotels.
She kept playing.
She competed in more than 250 professional tournaments and won the 1973 Kelly Springfield Open in Australia.
But her contribution to golf would extend well beyond her own scorecard.
Powell carried her familyโs commitment forward at Clearview, teaching the game and making it more accessible to young people, women and others who had not always felt welcome.
In 2011, she founded Clearview HOPE.
The year-round, cost-free program serves women military veterans through golf instruction, regular play and a community that continues gathering even through the winter.
No previous golf experience required.
The purpose is not simply a better swing. It is confidence, connection and a place to belong.
Her father had served his country and returned to a game that excluded him.
His daughter now uses that same game to welcome others who have served.
That is a family legacy measured in more than trophies.
Renee Powell knows what exclusion costs.
She has spent her life making welcome something people can experience, not just something they hear.
