NEVER JUDGE AN OLD MAN BY HIS APPEARANCE. THEY HUMILIATED THE WRONG OLD MAN! A peaceful farmer wants nothing to do with trouble, but when outlaws cross his land, his hidden skills come back to life. 🤠 How dangerous do you think Henry really is?

In 1992, Paul Verhoeven asked Sharon Stone to take off her underwear for Basic Instinct. He promised the camera would not see anything. They were shooting the famous interrogation scene. Verhoeven told her the white cotton was reflecting the studio lights. He guaranteed nothing would be visible on screen. Stone trusted him. Months later, she sat in a screening room watching the final cut. The scene played. She realized she was completely exposed. She walked straight up to Verhoeven and slapped him across the face. But Verhoeven tells a different story. He claims Stone knew exactly what she was doing. According to him, she watched the playback on the monitor immediately after the shot. He says her outrage months later was pure panic, fueled by agents who told her the scene would ruin her career. Stone called her lawyer. Under Screen Actors Guild rules, she had the legal power to force the studio to cut the shot. In the end, she let it stay. She admitted it was exactly what the character would do. The consequences were a mix of massive success and a hidden trap. Financially, Basic Instinct grossed over $350 million worldwide. Stone was paid a flat fee of $500,000. Since she was not a proven star before filming, her contract had no backend points. The studio made hundreds of millions off that single shot. She saw zero extra dollars from the box office. Career-wise, the scene made her a global superstar, but it boxed her in. For the next decade, Hollywood only wanted her to play the cold seductress. She had to fight aggressively to prove she was a serious dramatic actress. That struggle eventually led to her Oscar-nominated role in Casino, which finally allowed her to command $5 to $7 million per film. As for the director, the broken trust was permanent. Stone and Verhoeven never worked together again.

In 1987, Jimmy Swaggart went on Larry King Live and called a rival TV preacher caught in a sex scandal “a cancer in the body of Christ.” The next year, a private detective’s camera caught Swaggart himself. Swaggart was Jerry Lee Lewis’s cousin, and his ministry made an estimated $142 million in 1986. In 1986 he also exposed another preacher, Marvin Gorman, for having an affair. Gorman left the ministry. Gorman wanted revenge. He hired a detective, who photographed Swaggart at a motel outside New Orleans with a prostitute named Debra Murphree. She later said he paid her to pose nude. On February 21, 1988, he stood in front of about 7,000 people at his own church in Baton Rouge. He never said what he had done. In the video below, his face twists as he looks up and says, “I have sinned against you, my Lord.” He asks for every stain to be washed away “until it is in the seas of God’s forgetfulness.” His church ordered him out of the pulpit for a year. He refused and was defrocked. He later paid Gorman $1.8 million to settle a lawsuit. In 1991, police in California pulled him over for driving on the wrong side of the road. The woman in his Jaguar said she was a prostitute. This time there were no tears. He told his church, “The Lord told me it’s flat none of your business.” He died in July 2025, at 90. Netflix’s documentary on the TV preacher scandals comes out November 20. So were the tears in 1988 real, or did he just know what 7,000 people and a TV camera needed to see?

Reminds me the Swiss joke: A German walks into a Swiss bank, leans over the counter, and whispers nervously: “I want to withdraw 10’000 euros." The Swiss banker looks at him and replies in a normal, booming voice: "You can speak up, sir, poverty is no shame in Switzerland
I work in fraud and if someone said they needed to withdraw 2.5k in cash for a holiday I'd definitely be asking further questions.
