Yesterday the Telegraph reported on my comments about air conditioning. The comment section is quite something. I have apparently become a hero of the anti net zero crowd by saying something what I think is sensible about air con. Allow me to point out three ironies in this 🧵

How does your utility set its profit target? By looking at what other utilities earn. How do regulators approve it? By looking at what other regulators allowed. This is called "the circle game." And it's a big reason your utility bills are so high. Here is how it works...

Your @MyBGE bill has definitely gone up, and the increase this month is only the first of three to come in the first three months of the year. Gas rates have tripled since @Exelon acquired the company. @briaovers breaks down what's going on: thebanner.com/economy/bge-bi…

Lot of debate about gas turbines being sold out or not, interesting comments from GE Vernova's CEO in WSJ - Confirms: sold out on turbines through 2028; cautious about investing in incremental capacity - Only 10% of their explicit backlog is directly AI/hyperscalers + third of 'reservations' hyperscalers/AI - The rest is wider electrification trends + huge international demand - Also details on new nuclear in TVA: starting construction 2027 with plant online ~2032 - an incredibly fast timeline and will put these SMRs ahead of any new AP 1000 (except maybe VC summer?)

I have a new essay in the New Republic. I used to see things as left versus right. Now I worry about the money at the top. And while it may sound strange, I think this is a hopeful way of looking at the world that opens the door to coalitions that seemed impossible before

Kamala Harris visited Saginaw MI today. It's one of the small industrial cities I mentioned in this piece over the weeend, where the Dem share of vote has fallen sharply since '12. It's a category of place often overlooked in the usual metro/rural framing: propublica.org/article/elect…

Kamala Harris came to my hometown of Pittsfield MA for a fundraiser today. The first time in a while that a presidential candidate has come through a city that's been through a lot. It was quite a scene, w/ hundreds out for a glimpse. Hard to overstate the energy shift underway.

As chair of a local transportation committee and member of a federal one, I've seen Monica's work up close for almost a decade. She's brilliant. America's car-centric transportation policy is bad for cities & towns, bad for budgets, and bad for the environment. The Secretary is thinking differently. It's refreshing.

This will be devastating to a downtown DC already reeling from remote work. It will greatly increase the share of people going to games in cars instead of transit. But on upside, it will be very convenient for executives at Amazon HQ2, so close by, to get to their corporate box.

"Transformers of all types are now harder for utilities to source, leading them to purchase overseas for higher prices..." Hmm, wasn't there a small city in Western MA that used to produce lots of transformers before GE shut it down? Starts w/ a P, maybe? tdworld.com/substations/arti…

A 20% hydrogen blend would increase gas costs by around 16%, while only reducing emissions by 7% due to inefficiencies in burning hydrogen. @E3G is joined by @OctopusEnergy, @UKGBC, @wwf_uk & others to urge the government to reconsider blending plans theguardian.com/environment/…

The future of gas is expensive for two key reasons: 📈 First, distribution costs and rates will increase unsustainably due to the increasing cost of maintaining a gas distribution system ($$$ pipeline replacements) alongside declining gas usage. subscriber.politicopro.com/a…
