#FairyFriday ๐ŸŒทโœจ #TulipFairy ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ In English folklore, the Tulip Faeries once tended red blooms beside a hidden cottage. When a farmer tore them up for crops, the faeries vanishedโ€ฆ and the red tulips with them. Yet each full moon, they returnโ€”blossoming only on one old womanโ€™s grave, a quiet tribute to a motherโ€™s love and lingering magic. ๐ŸŒ•๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ #BookChatweekly ๐ŸŽจ Cicely Mary Barker

Professor Janet Todd's 'definitive biography of Aphra Behn, the Royalist spy and pioneering Restoration dramatist, novelist and poet of the erotic', is one we can highly recommend! A fascinating life.
Aphra Behn died #onthisday in 1609. She was one of the first women to earn a living by writing plays and poetry, publishing under the pseudonym Astrea. She was also employed by Charles II as a spy during the Dutch War. She is remembered in Virginia Woolfโ€™s book A Room of Oneโ€™s Own, with the lines: โ€˜All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn, which is, most scandalously but rather appropriately, in Westminster Abbey, for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds.โ€™
