Join us for Crime at the Coast this Sunday at @TorquayMuseum. We'll be discussing crime in wartime, cosy crime, and other things a bit too close to home when it comes to murder! #crimewriters @MichaelJecks @AJMacKnovels @NellDixon @BookDevon @ExeterCityofLit

Glad it's not only me. I'm always surprised when even the best writers fall prey to these cliches. I guess they sneak in and editors either don't see them or don't think they are a problem. Editors out there - what do you think?

The cliche I'm spotting which is just as bad is 'the smile didn't reach his/her eyes'. Even the best writers succumb but it does make me groan 🙂

Suzanne Clark writes well. I've not read the other book. Will look forward to hearing your thoughts. My big book for the Autumn will be Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Not read him before.

I have heard of it but never read it. So many good books have come out of Ireland.

Whilst it often feels bleak I think that pretty well every period in history can point to that experience. And, this point in time enjoys many benefits that other periods in history would hardly believe possible..so, I remain an optimistic.🙂

Thanks Jane. What a great shortlist. 6 very different books. I didnt get around to reading the longlisted books so haven't any sense of those that didn't make the final 6. I'd love to hear people's houghts on those as well 🙂

My heart goes out to you. No pearls of wisdom but what I try to keep in my mind when I suffer a loss is how that person would want me to be and the kind of life they'd want for me. Maybe living that life is the way to honour them best.
