We’ve lost one of the all-time great brasilianistas. Riordan Roett, for 45 years (!) a professor at SAIS and author of 25+ books, passed away on Saturday, the school confirms. His scholarship won him the the Order of Rio Branco (Brazil), the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins (Chile) and numerous other awards. He was known above all for his generosity with young people, including a woefully under-employed Texan journalist who wasn’t even his student, but whom he indulged anyway with a long coffee and chat about Brazil in his Washington DC office back in the mid-2000s — I’m sure countless others have similar stories. SAIS said plans for a memorial service are still being made. RIP Riordan Roett
Yes, a Flávio government would surely be closer to Washington, but I don't expect major disruptions with China either. “You’ve seen versions of this all over Latin America, with leaders on the new right who have very quickly pivoted to a more neutral or nonaligned posture when it comes to the China-versus-U.S. competition,” I told The New Yorker's @ishaantharoor . “But it’s especially true of Brazil.”

Body language: remember this other debate? Yes, Flávio Bolsonaro adopted the same tactic, walking behind Lula throughout the debate, making faces, and at times mocking his opponent. He had WAY more screen time than Lula because of that. And it didn’t look great...
Flávio showed he is the most polished, prepared and palatable of the Bolsonaros. Lula landed a few good punches. Overall though I doubt the Brazil debate changed any votes

@Yale
It does feel like Lula is closing the gap, and not just because of recent polls like today’s from Quaest. His recent rallies were well attended, social media engagement has been better, and the pro Bolsonaro right has been yelling at each other about low turnout and dangers of clima de já ganhou (an atmosphere like they’ve already won). I still don’t think it will be enough to prevent a Flavio victory, & polls have consistently undercounted Brazilian right, but I’m back to watching

Why Multilatinas Are Becoming More American
From Grupo Bimbo’s billion-dollar U.S. investment plans to Nubank’s entry into the American banking market, regional companies are increasingly treating the U.S. not just as an export destination, but as a home market.
What does this deeper integration mean for Latin America’s global competitiveness?
Conrado Tenaglia explores the trend in Americas Quarterly.

"El Salvador doesn't go far enough," Flávio Bolsonaro says, promising 500k new prison spots, chemical castration for convicted rapists and 8-year minimum sentence for thieves of cell phones (would depend on Congress passing law)

Fujimori approval falls from 43% to 28% in just a month, apparently on economic and crime fears, but you also sorta wonder if this is just normal Peruvian politics. (Home of the 3% approval rating!)
