Based on pioneering work by @BAGarvy and Fran Lund that B cells are key antigen presenting cells for Pneumocystis (a common fungal pneumonia in infants), @MNoell_12 figured infants must have anti-fungal IgMs that predict T cell responses. They do! insight.jci.org/articles/vie…

This is why 2nd boosters should be available for all health care workers now. A report on ~30,000 Israeli HCWs indicates 65% lower risk of breakthrough infections during the Omicron wave (4 vs 3 doses) @JAMANetworkOpen jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Incredible the speed of analysis of new variants, in 2 weeks we did a full analysis and wrote a preprint but we need to drop that time to less than a week for future VoCs. Omicron has high propensity for open state, immune escape on 28% of Abs tested.

Things deteriorating here in New Orleans. Storm stalled. NWS updates are worthless. My guess is that this is the turn with the westerlies. We have to wait for it to take off east and the eye passes right over us. #IDA #HurricaneIda #NWS

Thank you! I’m honored to have such a great mentor!
Big congrats @casso89 for winning the SAIS prize for best PhD thesis in lifescience! During his productive time in my lab, he studied a variety of CD4 T cell responses: to therapeutics, viruses, commensals and pathogenic bacteria. Well deserved!

Of 25,000+ people who tested positive for #COVID19 in Germany, 8% had very high viral loads; about a third of these had little to no symptoms. The results suggest asymptomatic people can be expected to be as infectious as hospitalized patients @c_drosten fcld.ly/tx0vn7z
