Best of X, I am studying this again:
"This is a framework for how to survive and grow a civilisation living on the thermodynamic gradient between a stellar object and deep space..."
Civilisation's Thermodynamic Corridor
Below is the full series of articles, very happy to post this on a Friday. There are 5 parts:
The Arena
The Machine
The Trajectory
The Viability Problem
The Implications
This is a framework for how to survive and grow a civilisation living on the thermodynamic gradient between a stellar object and deep space (where we live). It is based on first principle axioms of physics, such as the laws of thermodynamics. It is grounded in geometric algebra and mathematical rigour.
This is not sci-fi, this is the actual human condition. It is utterly fascinating when view through this framework.
There is also a results register which I will attach below.

Worthwhile read @RayDalio is insightful as always

human eggs can release a burst of zinc when they are activated.
researchers call it a “zinc spark.” here’s how they see it:
zinc leaves the egg and binds a fluorescent probe. under the microscope’s illumination, the probe produces the bright signal.
the flash makes a chemical release visible.
in a 2016 study, researchers activated human eggs experimentally and tracked zinc release alongside changes in calcium inside the egg.
this is what i love about measurement: a hidden chemical event becomes something you can follow through time.
Two excellent books by @AnnieJacobsen display at my local bookstore. I recommend reading both, they are both sobering.
Nice post that shows how many school is size satellites Starship will hold. For comparison, I'm standing next to a KH9 imagery intelligence satellite from the 1970s
I’m not sure people comprehend how much capacity today’s @SpaceX Starship delivered to Space but @MorganLBrennan shares the magnitude. Here’s a graphic I created showing School Busses to Space compared to the older Falcon 9. It’s a big deal for @Gwynne_Shotwell and @elonmusk
Some useful advise on correlation of assets, worth heeding. Another reference: The Intelligent Asset Allocator by William J. Bernstein.
@RayDalio discusses the usefulness of relatively uncorrelated assets as well.
This was my biggest Aha Moment about 15 years ago. Overlap is the least utilized tool. It also allowed me to embrace things I hated. I’m a huge Berkshire investor but I have never followed Munger and Warren as “All Knowing”. They are wise but many of those followers totally missed out on the rise of Gold and Bitcoin. That has often been what saves a portfolio or adds Alpha. Here’s a tool anyone can use to see how diversified you are. It shocks people when they find out $QQQ and $VOO are 52% similar by weight. Pick one as you Base. Use this and put two of your holdings in. etfrc.com/funds/overlap.php

One thing about #Byzantine, later modified #Ottoman builds, that attracts me is use of geometric fractals. The domes and spheres resembling mitosis, a living architecture. These are dynamic and alive, not merely static planetary configurations as original purpose. With the passing of time they attain new meaning as science advances. Associations are no less coherent by anachronism, nor deviation from intended purpose. Selection of my designs: #Architecture #Domes

More capable models will introduce increased biological risk. The magnitude is fiercely debated, the direction is not.
We need more resilient biodefense.
Reading "The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy" by Gil Duran. Decided reading Peter Thiel's essay is a good way to view the other side of the story.

Fly connectome is an amazing achievement: 166,000 neurons and 125 million synapses. BUT a human brain has roughly 86 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses about 500,000 times more cells and nearly a million times more connections
For the first time, scientists have mapped the complete brain and central nervous system of an adult male fruit fly — a key model organism in science. 🪰
Working alongside HHMI Janelia Research Campus and the scientific community, @GoogleResearch scientists and researchers used AI to combine millions of 2D images into 3D neural shapes, reconstructing a record-breaking 166,000+ neurons. This foundational map of the adult male fruit fly brain can help accelerate our understanding of the brain, and is a major milestone in neuroscience.
