For this day's Michaelmas, a good reminder from John Henry Newman: "There have been ages of the world, in which men have thought too much of Angels, and paid them excessive honour; honoured them so perversely as to forget the supreme worship due to Almighty God. This is the sin of a dark age. But the sin of what is called an educated age, such as our own, is just the reverse: to account slightly of them, or not at all; to ascribe all we see around us, not to their agency, but to certain assumed laws of nature." (from Sermon 29, "The Powers of Nature")

What do you mean by finding reference material? If you mean that you are using it as a more advanced Google search (which I often do) to point you to external reliable sources which you then actually read in their entirety, then sure. If you mean asking ChatGPT to summarize research for you, no. Not helpful in the slightest.

What does this mean for classical educators? It means there is developing in our age a natural and intuitive aptitude for the art of Grammar. Grammar is, after all, the art of discerning the shades of meaning in a word. It penetrates the superficial presentation of things, seeking the deeper meanings in word or text. Perhaps the best example of this skill was the way in which the Church Fathers read the Bible, demonstrated in the fourfold reading of Scripture—a discipline we might also call “pattern recognition.” Read more: open.substack.com/pub/thecla…

He's kidding, I think. I hope. ...I pray.
One way I’ve integrated AI into the classroom is that I begin each class by having students take out their laptops, open up Claude, and talk to it about whatever for 45 minutes while I go outside and vape.

The poetry of the corporation.
"Before we level set, and sync the cloud-first cable, Let’s put a pin in that and circle back, Drill down and align our thoughts on Slack— To whiteboard our hearts and put on the table." Read the full sonnet: substack.com/@theclassicaldi…

St. Abe’s is a classical Christian ✝️ academy serving students from Transitional Kindergarten to 12th grade, and dedicated to a discipleship-oriented education. Located in Aptos, California, St. Abe's serves students from all over Santa Cruz County, and Monterey Bay. Their goal is to be a community of learners who love and know the Triune God, His Word, and His world. Their Christian faith inspires them to pursue truth and goodness and to love their students as individuals created in God’s image. They aim to teach their students to think of themselves as disciples, each blessed with unique gifts. They equip them with the mindset of impacting culture with the power of God. Living in the Monterey Bay 🌊 means being surrounded by natural beauty, and enjoying indoor-outdoor living nearly year-round. It is not uncommon for PE to move to the beach 🌴 for students to surf together after class and for field trips to include redwood hikes, extreme tidepooling, ocean kayaking, yosemite overnights and much more. St. Abe's is thankful for their wonderful families and the awe-inspiring place they call home!

Do you have a technology policy at your school? We'd love to see examples of schools prioritizing spiritual formation through limiting technological use.
At New Citadel, we have a strict technology policy that is low-tech and includes no phones in the classroom. newcitadelclassical.org

Because the nature of looking up words in a thesaurus and then choosing one based on your judgment is a more engaged and rational activity than asking an AI to provide them to you which obscures the AI's "bias" in selecting words, minimizes the engagement with the differences between synonyms, and reduces student judgment to picking the first one of a list. Using a device--hit this button; get that result--is a different process than using a tool--swing the axe with attention or feel the consequences.
