The government simultaneously telling people to stock up on food, and going ahead with extracting more fossil fuels from the North Sea bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj9x… The fact that they can't connect the two, shows they haven't a clue about what climate breakdown actually means

This is such drivel that I have to post it again Spending on HS2 - a couple of hundred miles of railway between London and Birmingham - £100 BILLION + Spending to tackle wildfires and extreme weather - 'almost a £100 million' It just beggars belief theguardian.com/commentisfre…

The effing Bbc is failing v badly to connect the extreme disaster with its obvious cause: climate collapse: bbc.co.uk/news/live/c6y8mjmn… They just called it a ‘natural disaster’ on radio 4. That’s a misleading euphemism at best. So wrenchingly infuriating.
The disaster in Nepal will not be enough to wake up the western media. They ignored the desperate pleas of the worlds leading scientists. They ignored 230 killed after record rain drowned Valencia. They ignored much of the city of Los Angeles burning to the ground. They ignored ocean temperatures hotter than in 125,000 years. Very little will make them stand up to their billionaire owners with their fossil fuel links, even when they are endangering all life - including the lives of their loved ones.

The only way to address the climate and ecological crisis through our governments, is the war footing, @ProfBillMcGuire mentions. Obviously it is not the same as a war, and it must be as global as possible. The difference between the WW2 precedent and now, is that the aim must not be to return to business as usual as in WW2, but to transition to a sustainable society. One of the big misunderstandings, is that we can know now what a sustainable society would look like. We can only know for certain what a unsustainable society heading for collapse look like, and we are living in it. We can know roughly what we need to do and a lot of it is just stopping what we are doing now. However, creating an actual sustainable society, not heading for collapse, is going to need the collaborative thinking of many great minds (and just ordinary people) working together. In fact, this is one of the first necessities, moving from an artificial competitive situation, created by big egos vying for power, to a collaborative, cooperative situation. It would be an ongoing process. It must start by essentially freezing the current economy and transitioning it to a sustainable one. I know what people will say, that this is far too idealistic, it will never happen. But radical change is coming whether you like it or not. If climate change and ecological catastrophe, collapses our civilization, the change is going to be radical in the most frightening way. We will never be able to put our civilization together again. This danger is not in the distant future, but from now onwards. Our civilization is a lot less resilient than people think. The only thing that currently holds it together is the pursuit of economic growth, profit, returns on investments. But as soon as that becomes difficult it will collapse like a pack of cards, with nothing to hold it together. But if we cooperate and work for the common good, that will not happen. The only way to avoid collapse is people all cooperatively working together for the common good. Then if things get really bad, it won't fall apart like it currently will. It is not me being unrealistic. It is those who believe business as usual, will continue in the face of climate breakdown and ecological catastrophe, who are totally being unrealistic. We have a choice, ignore the climate and ecological crisis and face the collapse of our civilization and the starvation of billions (prior to the industrial revolution, the world only supported a population of less than 1 billion - the only way we can continue to feed 8 billion, is an organized economy, but not one organized in the present way). Or work together cooperatively for the common good to save ourselves. If you think I am being idealistically unrealistic for pointing out how can avert collapse, so be it. But I'm not the unrealistic fantasist. That is those are people who believe that business as usual can carry on. That there is somehow a way to avoid taking radical action by ignoring the climate and ecological crisis. No, if you just ignore it, you face the radical change of nightmares.
Stock up on tinned food? Is this some sort of joke? Climate breakdown is set to have a catastrophic impact on food supply The UK already cannot feed itself, and other countries will hang on to what they have Nothing less than a war footing will cut it theguardian.com/politics/202…

Our AGM is just over a month away! It's open to all and is a change to hear what we have been up to and think about the future.

Only a newspaper in the grip of extreme psychosis could ever allow a contributor to describe the slow tortuous death by starvation of billions of people due to the actions of a small elite as "concerning" and "sad". "I don’t think humanity will be wiped out, but so many people will suffer enormously and unnecessarily because of these cascading effects coming together. That’s concerning and really, really sad.” theguardian.com/environment/…

Someone on the news saying how shocked they are by the wildfires. No one listening to scientists for the last 20 years is shocked.

1/2. THE TRUTH Sadiq Khan says "people need the truth." So here fellow good citizens of London is the truth: 1. By 2050 25% of your houses will be subsiding. 2. At some point in the next 30 years a fire storm wild fire will rip through the city killing thousands of people - there will be another "Great Fire of London" 3. At the same time you will face regular food crises which will see mass evacuations of the city as people search for sources of sustenance 4. At some point in the next century the city will have to be permanently abandoned as sea levels go over 5 metres, and after that over 10 metres. This is now locked in. 5. Net zero is the biggest hoax in British history. It is pure bullshit. Everyone in the know, knows we are at 1.5C now, temperatures are going up 0.4C in the next decade, and so by 2036 we will be passing 2C and, according to the British insurance industry (who presumably know what they are talking about), there will be 2 to 4 billion deaths as the world heads up to 3C. 6. Oh, and so yes - your pensions are well and truly fucked. Your mayor is lying to you. The whole British establishment is lying to you. And the reason they are doing this is because they think you are stupid and lame enough to sit there and take it. If you want a future for yourself and your kids then you need to read some history. Start with John Locke - the most famous political philosopher this country has produced, and check out what action he thinks is necessary and justified when a government facilitates the loss of the lives and livelihoods of its citizens. And yes - and then lies about it. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

If the media had reflected the scale of the emergency years ago we might have been able to avoid what we are seeing now. Even in 2026 they won’t. Even now they are saying we should just let it get worse. Unforgivable is an understatement. wri.org/insights/mail-sunday…

1/2. The most important sentence of our time "People don’t realise that we can’t make it get better again." It never goes back into balance - that option is not longer available. news.sky.com/story/brutal-ha… You either have a revolution to stop it getting worse, or it gets worse and worse and worse. Sometimes you have limited options in life. There is no reverse option. We are not Gods. The elites fucked up and you thought it would all go away if you just tried to forget about it and keep watching Netflix. Bad idea. theguardian.com/environment/…

1/2. The essence of humanist hubris is the notion every problem can be solved - meaning we are not humans but gods. But, as we are about to discover, we are just human after all. We sit there and let people in charge fuck things up. And then there is no going back. 10 years of hubris gets you 10,000 years of climatic chaos. Not clever. “What people are not getting is that we can’t turn this back – the CO2 to a large part remains in the air for thousands of years,” said Rahmstorf. “Some people think we can wait and, when it gets too bad, then we reduce emissions and things will get better again. People don’t realise that we can’t make it get better again. We can only prevent it from getting much worse.” theguardian.com/environment/…
