wrote about how+why black artists get left out of the indie sleaze nostalgia discourse for p&p!
When “indie sleaze” was actually happening, it was just called indie. But as the era gets repackaged through playlists, party photos, and Pinterest boards, the Black artists who helped shape the era are being left out.
@Santigold, Spank Rock, and @kilokish shed light on the scene they experienced, the boxes the industry put them in, and how the people telling its story shape what gets remembered.

From a vision of a cuckoo clock caught in a rainstorm to a freestyle over smooth jazz radio, Western Massachusetts' LUCY (Cooper B. Handy) finds inspiration for his outsider pop songs in unexpected places.
In our new interview with LUCY, he tells us, "When people are like, the music's so serious and funny at the same time...that's cool if you feel like that, but none of it really feels funny to me."
His new album 'CITIZEN'S ARREST' excels both as an entrée for the LUCY-curious and a high-water mark of the avant-garde oddball's prolific career.

profiled thirteendegrees for @PigsAndPlans. ghetto hipster is his best project yet and it’s cool to see a rapper breaking out of their “i need to sound exactly like my favorite artist” psychosis in real-time.

Thirteendegrees ° (@thirteendegreez) knows exactly what he’s doing. Seeing a gap that needed filling in Chicago’s underground, he worked to put himself at the forefront of the left-field wave of talent coming out of the city, using his keen eye for aesthetics to set him apart.
His newest project, ‘GHETTO HIPSTER’—which asks what would happen if 2013 Young Thug hopped on early A$AP Rocky cloud rap beats—is one of the standout albums of the year.
@millanverma0 interviewed the rising star in his hometown of Chicago, following the release of ‘GHETTO HIPSTER.’

AZ Chike has two collaborations with Tyler, The Creator on his new album ‘No Rest For the Wicked,’ which drops tonight. And their friendship began with a couple of hilarious interactions.
“Tyler just starts ranting, like, ‘Bruh, you’re so tough, and you got good skin, and good cheekbones,’” @AzChike tells Tommy Chill during a new P&P interview, remembering their first phone conversation.

Fousheé's 'Pointy Heights' is one of my favorite albums of the last few years to play from front to back. I hope one day more people appreciate how great this project is.
Two years ago today, Fousheé released ‘Pointy Heights.’ We spoke with her at the time about the trip to Jamaica that shaped the album: a visit to Pointy Heights, the community her late grandfather established after buying land for his family to live on, where nine children and all of their houses sit back to back to back.
@FousheeLive hadn't been since she was five, but her connection to Jamaican culture ran deep long before that trip. Her mother was a drummer in an all-girl band there, and reggae was always playing in the New Jersey home she grew up in.
In our feature, @CONFUSIONisDEAD writes, “There’s yearning, pain, nostalgia, serenity, anger, tenderness, and despair, sometimes swirling around each other at once, and mostly ambiguous enough to be left up to your own interpretation […] Musically, ’Pointy Heights’ is some of her most radiant work, beaming with syrupy grooves and free-spirited charm.”
We chatted with Fousheé about all of it: the history of ska, Bob Marley, her collaborative friendship with Steve Lacy, what it means to inherit a family's story, and more.

"Kendrick and I have made a lot of music together over the years, and there’s a trust between us that allows us to go somewhere deeper when the right record presents itself," Dahi tells us. “Every so often, a song opens a door you didn’t know you were looking for. 'How to Pray' did that for me—a new direction, a new chapter, and my very first video shoot."
Dahi's debut album 'Black Boy (Alternative)' is out this Friday, August 28 featuring an all-star cast of friends and collaborators.

Wrote about Clyde Crooks and the song ("38 inch loveseat") that snapped me out of a funk when I heard it for the first time
BEST NEW ARTIST: Clyde Crooks
Clyde Crooks might not be as in-your-face as a lot of today's buzziest noise in the post-hyperpop realm, but he's tastefully and consistently subverting pop’s expectations and quietly carving out a new path forward.
For our summer 2026 "Best New Artists" feature, P&P founder @CONFUSIONisDEAD writes, “My dopamine receptors had been numbed, and hearing Clyde Crooks' '38 inch loveseat' snapped me out of that funk. At around 1:21 in that song, I actually smirked because I was so relieved that I could still be surprised by music again. It's still possible, even without cartoonish vocal effects and bass that jiggles your internal organs.”
His new EP 'Hark' is out September 18, and his new single "Maybe Selena" is out now.

PgLang's new signee Imani Imani (@manithoughtss) sat down with Pigeons & Planes for her very first interview.
Before dropping her debut album ‘Papercut’ out of nowhere in June, the Netherlands-based artist has been slowly perfecting her sound. For six years, she hunkered down in an Amsterdam studio with producer Daan Zinkhaan until they were ready to share the music.
“We really dedicated ourselves to creating a sound that we feel would change something, because that's all I really care about in this thing,” she says. “I really have an intention with what I do, and that just takes time.”
Her debut album ‘Papercut’ arrived with essentially no rollout, a decision that felt very natural for Imani. “I think it's good music,” she says. “I believe in it. So it'll find its way at the right time. If I would've put out one song, it wouldn't do justice to how much work we had already done, or how much of a body of work we already had. And obviously I had the luck of having a platform like pgLang that supports it, so that's the rollout in itself.”

Very stoked about this piece I wrote up for @PigsAndPlans. The OK Hotel is a vital part of Seattle's music history from Nirvana to Blue Scholars.
But I also found it's a sweet story about a young couple who took a chance on an old building only to become the hub of a movement.
Before Nirvana debuted "Smells Like Teen Spirit" there, before the grunge tourists and record executives showed up, the OK Hotel was an abandoned flophouse, rescued by a young couple who hauled out trash in exchange for free rent. The space hosted Mother Love Bone's first-ever show, welcomed riot grrrl act Bikini Kill on that same fateful Nirvana bill, and later became a haven for a new wave of Seattle hip-hop producers after a riot and the Nisqually earthquake shut its doors for good in 2001.
Seattle based writer and podcast host @DustyHenry_ dives into the building's improbable, overlapping histories and what's left of it now.
