Two years ago today, Fousheé released ‘Pointy Heights.’ We spoke with her at the time about the trip to Jamaica that shaped the album: a visit to Pointy Heights, the community her late grandfather established after buying land for his family to live on, where nine children and all of their houses sit back to back to back. @FousheeLive hadn't been since she was five, but her connection to Jamaican culture ran deep long before that trip. Her mother was a drummer in an all-girl band there, and reggae was always playing in the New Jersey home she grew up in. In our feature, @CONFUSIONisDEAD writes, “There’s yearning, pain, nostalgia, serenity, anger, tenderness, and despair, sometimes swirling around each other at once, and mostly ambiguous enough to be left up to your own interpretation […] Musically, ’Pointy Heights’ is some of her most radiant work, beaming with syrupy grooves and free-spirited charm.” We chatted with Fousheé about all of it: the history of ska, Bob Marley, her collaborative friendship with Steve Lacy, what it means to inherit a family's story, and more.
