This raises significant First Amendment concerns. SCOTUS made clear government cannot purge its ranks of members of the opposition party unless political affiliation is relevant to the job. Plus, under fed law, personnel decisions on career State employees must be “merit” based.
SCOOP: The State Dept has started asking career diplomats up for promotion if they voted for Trump in 16, 20, 24.
Federal law prohibits politically based hiring for career staff.
State tells @washingtonsun it's screening for "fidelity" and execution of the president's vision👇
College sports aren’t immune from the First Amendment. Reporters have every right to stand on a public sidewalk and seek comment from players and coaches. Maryland football’s understanding of the First Amendment is as bad as its run defense, which is saying something.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.
A reporter hearing “you better be careful” from a government official is something you’d expect in a Moscow back alley. Trump has repeatedly lost in court when trying to kick reporters out of the WH. He’ll lose again if he tries again. The First Amendment isn’t going anywhere.

The DOJ has appealed Judge Wise’s ruling in @StanfordDaily v. Rubio. Our lawyers at @TheFIREorg are fully prepared to defend that ruling in court, ensuring we uphold and expand protections for non-citizens to participate in student journalism, at The Stanford Daily and beyond.
Trump admin just formally appealed the CNN/MSNow/Politico preliminary injunction to the D.C. Circuit. But the First Amendment principles are settled: The president cannot kick news organizations out of generally accessible press areas based on hostility towards their coverage.
If the DOJ’s position on appeal is that the press pass revocation was Definitely About National Security and not antipathy towards the press, it doesn’t exactly help that your statement announcing the appeal attacks the press and does not mention national security.
A White House official confirms that the administration intends to appeal Judge Kelly's order prohibiting Trump from banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico while the lawsuit plays out.
Here's the full comment:
"The Fake News has no place demanding a spot in the President’s Oval Office. The lies they smear are a disservice to the American public and tear at the very fabric of our Democracy. They’re completely capable of reporting from directly outside. We intend to appeal this misguided decision."
Remarkable that even in their statement announcing an appeal they can’t stop saying the quiet part out loud: (that they revoked the press passes because of negative coverage, not “national security”)
NEW: The White House has responded to Judge Kelly's ruling that indefinitely reversed Trump's ban on MS NOW, CNN, and Politico. They are vowing to appeal.
A spokesperson tells MS NOW: “The Fake News has no place demanding a spot in the President’s Oval Office. The lies they smear are a disservice to the American public and tear at the very fabric of our Democracy. They’re completely capable of reporting from directly outside. We intend to appeal this misguided decision.”
Golf is such a humbling sport. One day you’re thinking you could hold your own in an amateur tournament and the next you’re wondering if your central nervous system is defective
Wild that Jayden Daniels couldn't recognize there would only be [redacted at his mom's request] seconds left with no timeouts if he went down
Extending an economic lifeline to a rival power actively attacking allies (including NATO members) just for a chance at a poll bump before a midterm election is disgraceful and shameful.
The President of the United States is explicitly saying that reporters who say things he doesn’t like should be arrested. We must not become numb to the unprecedented assault on free speech from the man who is supposed to be the leader of the “free” world.

So I’m walking to the elevator this morning and the apt door across from it is open. The elevator door opens and 10 feds with machine guns walk out. I get back from my run and they’re all searching that apt and they have a battering ram on the outside.
So, that’s fun.

I’ll be live on CNN at 11 pm eastern discussing the press pass litigation and the First Amendment. Tune in! Or don’t! It’s your Constitutional right either way 🦅
